{41:1} Et factum est in mense septimo, venit Ismahel filius Nathaniæ, filii Elisama de semine regali, et optimates regis, et decem viri cum eo, ad Godoliam filium Ahicam in Masphath: et comederunt ibi panes simul in Masphath.
{41:1} And it happened that, in the seventh month, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama of royal descent, with the nobles of the king, and accompanied by ten men, went to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah. And they ate bread together there, in Mizpah.

{41:2} Surrexit autem Ismahel filius Nathaniæ, et decem viri, qui cum eo erant, et percusserunt Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan gladio, et interfecerunt eum, quem præfecerat rex Babylonis terræ.
{41:2} Then Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, rose up, and the ten men who were with him, and they struck down Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, and they killed him whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

{41:3} Omnes quoque Iudæos, qui erant cum Godolia in Masphath, et Chaldæos, qui reperti sunt ibi, et viros bellatores percussit Ismahel.
{41:3} Likewise, Ishmael struck down all the Jews who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, with the Chaldeans who were found there, and the men of war.

{41:4} Secundo autem die postquam occiderat Godoliam, nullo adhuc sciente,
{41:4} Then, on the second day after he had killed Gedaliah, while no one yet knew of it,

{41:5} venerunt viri de Sichem, et de Silo, et de Samaria octoginta viri: rasi barba, et scissis vestibus, et squallentes: et munera, et thus habebant in manu, ut offerrent in domo Domini.
{41:5} men arrived from Shechem, and from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men, with their beards shaved, and their garments rent, and unbathed. And they had gifts and frankincense in hand, so that they might make an offering in the house of the Lord.

~ The word ‘squallentes’ means dirty or covered in dirt. In this context, the men are mourning (as indicated by their rent garments) or fulfilling some type of vow (perhaps in reparation for some sin), and so they have refrained from bathing. They may also have put ashes on their heads for the same reason.

{41:6} Egressus ergo Ismahel filius Nathaniæ in occursum eorum de Masphath, incedens et plorans ibat: cum autem occurrisset eis, dixit ad eos: Venite ad Godoliam filium Ahicam.
{41:6} Therefore, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, departing from Mizpah to meet them, went forth weeping as he was walking. And when he had met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam.”

{41:7} Qui cum venissent ad medium civitatis, interfecit eos Ismahel filius Nathaniæ circa medium laci, ipse et viri, qui erant cum eo.
{41:7} And when they had arrived at the center of the city, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, put them to death around the public cistern, he and the men who were with him.

{41:8} Decem autem viri reperti sunt inter eos, qui dixerunt ad Ismahel: Noli occidere nos: quia habemus thesauros in agro, frumenti, et hordei, et olei, et mellis. Et cessavit: et non interfecit eos cum fratribus suis.
{41:8} But ten men were found among them, who said to Ishmael: “Do not kill us! For in the field we have storehouses of grain and barley and oil and honey.” And so he ceased, and he did not put them to death with their brothers.

{41:9} Lacus autem, in quem proiecerat Ismahel omnia cadavera virorum, quos percussit propter Godoliam, ipse est, quem fecit rex Asa propter Baasa regem Israel: ipsum replevit Ismahel filius Nathaniæ occisis.
{41:9} Now the cistern, into which Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had struck down because of Gedaliah, is the same one that king Asa made out of fear of Baasha, the king of Israel. This same cistern Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, filled with those who were slain.

{41:10} Et captivas duxit Ismahel omnes reliquias populi, qui erant in Masphath: filias regis, et universum populum, qui remanserat in Masphath: quos commendaverat Nabuzardan princeps militiæ Godoliæ filio Ahicam. Et cepit eos Ismahel filius Nathaniæ, et abiit ut transiret ad filios Ammon.
{41:10} Then Ishmael led away captive all the remnant of the people who were at Mizpah, the king’s daughters as well as all the people who remained at Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, had committed to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam. And Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, seized them and went away, so that he might go over to the sons of Ammon.

{41:11} Audivit autem Iohanan filius Caree, et omnes principes bellatorum, qui erant cum eo, omne malum, quod fecerat Ismahel filius Nathaniæ.
{41:11} But Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the fighters who were with him, heard about all the evil that Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, had done.

{41:12} Et assumptis universis viris, profecti sunt ut bellarent adversum Ismahel filium Nathaniæ, et invenerunt eum ad aquas multas, quæ sunt in Gabaon.
{41:12} And taking all the men, they set out to make war against Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah. And they found him at the great waters that are in Gibeon.

{41:13} Cumque vidisset omnis populus, qui erat cum Ismahel, Iohanan filium Caree, et universos principes bellatorum, qui erant cum eo, lætati sunt.
{41:13} And when all the people who were with Ishmael had seen Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the fighters who were with him, they rejoiced.

{41:14} Et reversus est omnis populus, quem ceperat Ismahel, in Masphath: reversusque abiit ad Iohanan filium Caree.
{41:14} And all the people whom Ishmael had seized turned back to Mizpah. And they returned and went over to Johanan, the son of Kareah.

{41:15} Ismahel autem filius Nathaniæ fugit cum octo viris a facie Iohanan, et abiit ad filios Ammon.
{41:15} But Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, fled with eight men from the face of Johanan, and they went over to the sons of Ammon.

{41:16} Tulit ergo Iohanan filius Caree, et omnes principes bellatorum, qui erant cum eo, universas reliquias vulgi, quas reduxerat ab Ismahel filio Nathaniæ de Masphath, postquam percussit Godoliam filium Ahicam: fortes viros ad prælium, et mulieres, et pueros, et eunuchos, quos reduxerat de Gabaon.
{41:16} Therefore, Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the fighters who were with him, took from Mizpah the entire remnant of the common people, whom they had led away from Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam. These were strong men of battle, and women, and children, and eunuchs: those whom he had led away from Gibeon.

{41:17} Et abierunt, et sederunt peregrinantes in Chamaam, quæ est iuxta Bethlehem, ut pergerent, et introirent Ægyptum
{41:17} And they went away and settled as sojourners at Chimham, which is near Bethlehem, so that they might continue on and enter into Egypt,

{41:18} a facie Chaldæorum: timebant enim eos, quia percusserat Ismahel filius Nathaniæ Godoliam filium Ahicam, quem præposuerat rex Babylonis in Terra Iuda.
{41:18} away from the face of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them, because Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, had struck down Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had made governor in the land of Judah.

{42:1} Et accesserunt omnes principes bellatorum, et Iohanan filius Caree, et Iezonias filius Osaiæ, et reliquum vulgus a parvo usque ad magnum:
{42:1} And all the leaders of the warriors, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and Azariah, the son of Hoshaiah, and the rest of the common people, from the least even to the greatest, drew near.

{42:2} Dixeruntque ad Ieremiam prophetam: Cadat oratio nostra in conspectu tuo: et ora pro nobis ad Dominum Deum tuum pro universis reliquiis istis, quia derelicti sumus pauci de pluribus, sicut oculi tui nos intuentur:
{42:2} And they said to Jeremiah the prophet: “Let our supplication fall before your sight. And pray for us to the Lord your God, on behalf of this entire remnant. For few out of many have been left behind, just as your eyes behold us.

{42:3} Et annunciet nobis Dominus Deus tuus viam, per quam pergamus, et verbum, quod faciamus.
{42:3} And so, may the Lord your God announce to us the way that we must travel, and the word that we must accomplish.”

{42:4} Dixit autem ad eos Ieremias propheta: Audivi: ecce ego oro ad Dominum Deum vestrum secundum verba vestra. Omne verbum, quodcumque responderit mihi, indicabo vobis: nec celabo vos quidquam.
{42:4} Then Jeremiah, the prophet, said to them: “I have listened. Behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words. And whatever word he will respond to me, I will declare to you. And I will conceal nothing from you.”

{42:5} Et illi dixerunt ad Ieremiam: Sit Dominus inter nos testis veritatis et fidei, si non iuxta omne verbum, in quo miserit te Dominus Deus tuus ad nos, sic faciemus.
{42:5} And they said to Jeremiah: “May the Lord be the witness between us of truth and fidelity, if we do not act according to whatever word the Lord your God will send by you to us.

{42:6} Sive bonum est, sive malum, voci Domini Dei nostri, ad quem mittimus te, obediemus. Ut bene sit nobis cum audierimus vocem Domini Dei nostri.
{42:6} Whether it is for good or for harm, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you. So may it be well with us, when we heed the voice of the Lord our God.”

{42:7} Cum autem completi essent decem dies, factum est verbum Domini ad Ieremiam.
{42:7} Then, when ten days had been completed, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.

{42:8} Vocavitque Iohanan filium Caree, et omnes principes bellatorum, qui erant cum eo, et universum populum a minimo usque ad magnum.
{42:8} And he called Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of warriors who were with him, and all the people, from the least even to the greatest.

{42:9} Et dixit ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israel, ad quem misistis me, ut prosternerem preces vestras in conspectu eius:
{42:9} And he said to them: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you have sent me, so that I may present your petitions in his sight:

{42:10} Si quiescentes manseritis in terra hac, ædificabo vos, et non destruam; plantabo, et non evellam: iam enim placatus sum super malo quod feci vobis.
{42:10} If you dwell quietly in this land, I will build you up, and I will not tear you down. I will plant you, and I will not uproot you. For now I have been appeased by the harm that I have done to you.

{42:11} Nolite timere a facie regis Babylonis, quem vos pavidi formidatis: nolite metuere eum, dicit Dominus: quia vobiscum sum ego, ut salvos vos faciam, et eruam de manu eius.
{42:11} Do not be afraid before the face of the king of Babylon, whom you have dreaded with great fear. Do not dread him, says the Lord. For I am with you, so that I may accomplish your salvation, and so that I may rescue you from his hand.

{42:12} Et dabo vobis misericordias, et miserebor vestri, et habitare vos faciam in terra vestra.
{42:12} And I will give you mercies, and I will take pity on you, and I will cause you to live in your own land.

{42:13} Si autem dixeritis vos: Non habitabimus in terra ista, nec audiemus vocem Domini Dei nostri,
{42:13} But if you say: ‘We will not live in this land, nor will we heed the voice of the Lord our God,’

{42:14} dicentes: Nequaquam, sed ad Terram Ægypti pergemus: ubi non videbimus bellum, et clangorem tubæ non audiemus, et famem non sustinebimus: et ibi habitabimus:
{42:14} saying: ‘Never! Instead, we will travel to the land of Egypt, where we will not see war, and we will not hear the blast of the trumpet, and we will not endure famine. And there we shall live.’

{42:15} Propter hoc nunc audite verbum Domini reliquiæ Iuda: Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: Si posueritis faciem vestram ut ingrediamini Ægyptum, et intraveritis ut ibi habitetis:
{42:15} Because of this, hear now the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: If you set your faces so as to advance into Egypt, and if you enter so that you may live there,

{42:16} gladius, quem vos formidatis, ibi comprehendet vos in Terra Ægypti: et fames, pro qua estis soliciti, adhærebit vobis in Ægypto, et ibi moriemini.
{42:16} the sword which you dread will overtake you there, in the land of Egypt, and the famine, about which you are anxious, will cling to you in Egypt, and there you shall die.

{42:17} Omnesque viri, qui posuerunt faciem suam ut ingrediantur Ægyptum, ut habitent ibi, morientur gladio, et fame, et peste: nullus de eis remanebit, nec effugiet a facie mali, quod ego afferam super eos.
{42:17} And all the men, who have set their faces so that they may advance to Egypt in order to live there, will die by the sword, and by famine, and by pestilence. None of them will remain, nor will they escape from the face of the evil that I will bring over them.

{42:18} Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: Sicut conflatus est furor meus, et indignatio mea super habitatores Ierusalem: sic conflabitur indignatio mea super vos, cum ingressi fueritis Ægyptum, et eritis in iusiurandum, et in stuporem, et in maledictum, et in opprobrium: et nequaquam ultra videbitis locum istum.
{42:18} For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Just as my fury and my indignation has been enflamed over the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so will my indignation be enflamed over you, when you will have entered into Egypt. And so you will be an oath, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a disgrace. And you will never see this place again.

~ These persons will be an oath in the sense that, later on, people will swear on the penalty of being punished as these persons were punished.

{42:19} Verbum Domini super vos reliquiæ Iuda: Nolite intrare Ægyptum: scientes scietis quia obtestatus sum vos hodie,
{42:19} This is the word of the Lord concerning you, O remnant of Judah: Do not choose to enter into Egypt, for certainly you understand what I have sworn to you this day.

{42:20} quia decepistis animas vestras: vos enim misistis me ad Dominum Deum nostrum dicentes: Ora pro nobis ad Dominum Deum nostrum, et iuxta omnia quæcumque dixerit tibi Dominus Deus noster, sic annuncia nobis, et faciemus.
{42:20} For you have deceived your own souls. For you have sent me to the Lord our God, saying: ‘Pray on our behalf to the Lord our God. And in accord with anything whatsoever that the Lord our God will tell you, announce this to us, and we will do it.’

{42:21} Et annunciavi vobis hodie, et non audistis vocem Domini Dei vestri super universis, pro quibus misit me ad vos.
{42:21} And I have announced it to you this day, and you have not heeded the voice of the Lord your God, concerning everything about which he has sent me to you.

{42:22} Nunc ergo scientes scietis quia gladio, et fame, et peste moriemini in loco, ad quem voluistis intrare ut habitaretis ibi.
{42:22} Therefore, know with certainty now, that you will die by the sword, and by famine, and by pestilence, in the place which you wish to enter so that you may live there.”

[Jeremiah 43]

{43:1} Factum est autem, cum complesset Ieremias loquens ad populum universos sermones Domini Dei eorum, pro quibus miserat eum Dominus Deus eorum ad illos, omnia verba hæc:
{43:1} Then it happened that, when Jeremiah had finished speaking all the words of the Lord their God to the people, all those words concerning which the Lord their God had sent him to them,

{43:2} dixit Azarias filius Osaiæ, et Iohanan filius Caree, et omnes viri superbi, dicentes ad Ieremiam: Mendacium tu loqueris: non misit te Dominus Deus noster, dicens: Ne ingrediamini Ægyptum ut habitetis illuc.
{43:2} Azariah, the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the exalted men, spoke to Jeremiah, saying: “You are speaking a lie! The Lord our God has not sent you to say: ‘You shall not enter into Egypt so as to live in that place.’

{43:3} Sed Baruch filius Neriæ incitat te adversum nos, ut tradat nos in manus Chaldæorum, ut interficiat nos, et traduci faciat in Babylonem.
{43:3} Instead, Baruch, the son of Neriah, has incited you against us, so as to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, to put us to death and to cause us to be led away into Babylon.”

{43:4} Et non audivit Iohanan filius Caree, et omnes principes bellatorum, et universus populus vocem Domini ut manerent in Terra Iuda.
{43:4} And so Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the warriors, and all the people, did not heed the voice of the Lord to remain in the land of Judah.

{43:5} Sed tollens Iohanan filius Caree, et universi principes bellatorum universos reliquiarum Iuda, qui reversi fuerant de cunctis gentibus, ad quas fuerant ante dispersi, ut habitarent in Terra Iuda:
{43:5} But Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the warriors, took away all the remnant of Judah, who had returned from all the nations (to which they had been scattered before) to live in the land of Judah:

{43:6} viros, et mulieres, et parvulos, et filias regis, et omnem animam, quam reliquerat Nabuzardan princeps militiæ cum Godolia filio Ahicam, filii Saphan, et Ieremiam prophetam, et Baruch filium Neriæ.
{43:6} men, and women, and children, and the daughters of the king, and every soul that Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, had left behind with Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah, the prophet, and Baruch, the son of Neriah.

{43:7} Et ingressi sunt Terram Ægypti, quia non obedierunt voci Domini: et venerunt usque ad Taphnis.
{43:7} And they entered into the land of Egypt. For they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they went as far as Tahpanhes.

{43:8} Et factus est sermo Domini ad Ieremiam in Taphnis, dicens:
{43:8} And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes, saying:

{43:9} Sume lapides grandes in manu tua, et abscondes eos in crypta, quæ est sub muro latericio in porta domus Pharaonis in Taphnis, cernentibus viris Iudæis:
{43:9} “Take great stones in your hand, and you shall conceal them in the crypt which is under the brick wall at the gate of the house of Pharaoh at Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah.

{43:10} Et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum Deus Israel: Ecce ego mittam, et assumam Nabuchodonosor regem Babylonis servum meum: et ponam thronum eius super lapides istos, quos abscondi, et statuet solium suum super eos.
{43:10} And you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send for and take Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne over these stones which I have concealed, and he will establish his throne upon them.

{43:11} Veniensque percutiet Terram Ægypti: quos in mortem, in mortem: et quos in captivitatem, in captivitatem: et quos in gladium, in gladium.
{43:11} And he will come and strike the land of Egypt: those who are meant for death, shall go to death, and those for captivity, to captivity, and those for the sword, to the sword.

{43:12} Et succendet ignem in delubris deorum Ægypti, et comburet ea, et captivos ducet illos: et amicietur Terra Ægypti, sicut amicitur pastor pallio suo: et egredietur inde in pace.
{43:12} And he will kindle a fire in the shrines of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them down, and he will lead them away captive. And he will clothe himself with the land of Egypt, just as a shepherd is clothed with his cloak. And he will go forth from that place in peace.

{43:13} Et conteret statuas domus Solis, quæ sunt in Terra Ægypti: et delubra deorum Ægypti comburet igni.
{43:13} And he will crush the statues of the house of the Sun, those that are in the land of Egypt, and the shrines of the gods of Egypt he will burn up with fire.”

[Jeremiah 44]

{44:1} Verbum, quod factum est per Ieremiam ad omnes Iudæos, qui habitabant in Terra Ægypti, habitantes in Magdalo, et in Taphnis, et in Memphis, et in Terra Phatures, dicens:
{44:1} The word that came through Jeremiah to all the Jews who were living in the land of Egypt, living at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the land of Pathros, saying:

{44:2} Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum Deus Israel: Vos vidistis omne malum istud, quod adduxi super Ierusalem, et super omnes urbes Iuda: et ecce desertæ sunt hodie, et non est in eis habitator:
{44:2} “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You yourselves have seen all this evil that I have led over Jerusalem and over all the cities of Judah. And behold, they are desolate to this day, and there is no inhabitant in them,

{44:3} Propter malitiam, quam fecerunt ut me ad iracundiam provocarent, et irent ut sacrificarent, et colerent deos alienos, quos nesciebant et illi, et vos, et patres vestri.
{44:3} because of the wickedness which they have done, so that they provoked me to wrath, and because they went to offer sacrifice and worship to strange gods, which neither they, nor you, nor your fathers knew.

{44:4} Et misi ad vos omnes servos meos prophetas de nocte consurgens, mittensque et dicens: Nolite facere verbum abominationis huiuscemodi, quam odivi.
{44:4} And I sent to you all my servants, the prophets, rising in the night, and sending, and saying: ‘Do not choose to do this abominable word, which I hate.’

{44:5} Et non audierunt, nec inclinaverunt aurem suam ut converterentur a malis suis, et non sacrificarent diis alienis.
{44:5} But they did not listen, nor did they incline their ear, so that they would convert from their evil, and so that they would not sacrifice to strange gods.

{44:6} Et conflata est indignatio mea et furor meus, et succensa est in civitatibus Iuda, et in plateis Ierusalem: et versæ sunt in solitudinem et vastitatem secundum diem hanc.
{44:6} And so my indignation and my fury was fanned and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. And they have been turned into desolation and devastation, just as it is this day.

{44:7} Et nunc hæc dicit Dominus exercituum Deus Israel: Quare vos facitis malum grande hoc contra animas vestras, ut intereat ex vobis vir et mulier, parvulus et lactens de medio Iudæ, nec relinquatur vobis quidquam residuum:
{44:7} And now, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil against your own souls, so that, among you, man and woman, child and infant would pass away from the midst of Judah, and so that no remnant at all would be left behind of you?

{44:8} Provocantes me in operibus manuum vestrarum, sacrificando diis alienis in Terra Ægypti, in quam ingressi estis ut habitetis ibi: et dispereatis, et sitis in maledictionem, et in opprobrium cunctis gentibus terræ?
{44:8} For you have provoked me by the works of your hands, by sacrificing to strange gods in the land of Egypt, into which you have entered in order to live there, and so that you would perish and become a curse and a disgrace before all the nations of the earth.

{44:9} Numquid obliti estis mala patrum vestrorum, et mala regum Iuda, et mala uxorum eius, et mala vestra, et mala uxorum vestrarum, quæ fecerunt in Terra Iuda, et in regionibus Ierusalem?
{44:9} How could you have forgotten the evils of your fathers, and the evils of the kings of Judah, and the evils of their wives, and your own evils, and the evils of your own wives, which they have done in the land of Judah and in the regions of Jerusalem?

{44:10} Non sunt mundati usque ad diem hanc: et non timuerunt, et non ambulaverunt in lege Domini, et in præceptis meis, quæ dedi coram vobis et coram patribus vestris.
{44:10} They have not been cleansed, even to this day. And they have not feared, and they have not walked in the law of the Lord and in my precepts, which I have given before you and before your fathers.

{44:11} Ideo hæc dicit Dominus exercituum Deus Israel: Ecce ego ponam faciem meam in vobis in malum: et disperdam omnem Iudam.
{44:11} For this reason, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will set my face upon you for evil. And I will disperse all of Judah.

{44:12} Et assumam reliquias Iudæ, qui posuerunt facies suas ut ingrederentur Terram Ægypti, et habitarent ibi: et consumentur omnes in Terra Ægypti: cadent in gladio et in fame: et consumentur a minimo usque ad maximum in gladio, et in fame morientur: et erunt in iusiurandum, et in miraculum, et in maledictionem, et in opprobrium.
{44:12} And I will take the remnant of Judah, who had set their faces so that they would enter into the land of Egypt and live there, and they will all be consumed in the land of Egypt. They will fall by the sword and by famine. And they will be consumed, from the least, even to the greatest. By sword and by famine shall they die. And they will be an oath, and a wonder, and a curse, and a disgrace.

For we were filled with bread, and it was well with us, and we saw no evil.

{44:18} But since the time that we ceased to offer sacrifice to the queen of heaven, and to pour out libations to her, we have been in need of all things, and we have been consumed by the sword and by famine.

{44:19} But when we offer sacrifice to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, do we make cakes for her worship and offer libations to her without our husbands?”

{44:20} Et dixit Ieremias ad omnem populum adversum viros, et adversum mulieres, et adversum universam plebem, qui responderant ei verbum, dicens:
{44:20} And Jeremiah spoke to all the people, facing the men, and facing the women, and facing all the people who had responded this word to him, saying:

{44:21} Numquid non sacrificium, quod sacrificastis in civitatibus Iuda, et in plateis Ierusalem vos et patres vestri, reges vestri, et principes vestri, et populus terræ, horum recordatus est Dominus, et ascendit super cor eius?
{44:21} “Was this not the sacrifice that you offered in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your leaders, and the people of the land, which has been called to mind by the Lord and which has entered into his heart?

{44:22} And the Lord could no longer bear this, because of the evil of your intentions, and because of the abominations that you have done. And so, your land has become a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, and it is without an inhabitant, even to this day.

{44:23} Propterea quod sacrificaveritis idolis, et peccaveritis Domino: et non audieritis vocem Domini, et in lege, et in præceptis, et in testimoniis eius non ambulaveritis: idcirco evenerunt vobis mala hæc, sicut est dies hæc.
{44:23} This is because you have sacrificed to idols, and you have sinned against the Lord. And you have not heeded the voice of the Lord, and you have not walked in his law, and in his precepts, and in his testimonies. It is for this reason that these evils have happened to you, just as it is today.”

{44:27} Ecce ego vigilabo super eos in malum, et non in bonum: et consumentur omnes viri Iuda, qui sunt in Terra Ægypti, gladio, et fame donec penitus consumantur.
{44:27} Behold, I will be vigilant over them for harm, and not for good. And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will be consumed, by the sword and by famine, until they are thoroughly consumed.

{44:29} Et hoc vobis signum, ait Dominus, quod visitem ego super vos in loco isto: ut sciatis quia vere complebuntur sermones mei contra vos in malum.
{44:29} And this will be a sign to you, says the Lord, that I will visit against you in this place, so that truly you may know that my words will be completed against you for harm.”

{46:5} And what is next? I have seen them terrified, and turning their backs, their strong ones cut down. They have fled in disorder and have not looked back. Terror on every side, says the Lord.

{46:6} Non fugiat velox, nec salvari se putet fortis: Ad Aquilonem iuxta flumen Euphraten victi sunt, et ruerunt.
{46:6} Let not the swift take flight; let not the strong ones think to save themselves. They have been conquered and ruined, toward the north, near the river Euphrates.

{46:7} Quis est iste, qui quasi flumen ascendit: et veluti fluviorum, intumescunt gurgites eius?
{46:7} Who is this, who ascends like a flood, and whose streams swell up, like those of the rivers?

{46:8} Ægyptus, fluminis instar ascendit, et velut flumina movebuntur fluctus eius, et dicet: Ascendens operiam terram: perdam civitatem, et habitatores eius.
{46:8} Egypt ascends in the form of a river, and its waves will be moved like those of a river. And he will say: ‘I will ascend and cover the earth! I will perish the city and its inhabitants!’

{46:9} Ascendite equos, et exultate in curribus, et procedant fortes, Æthiopia, et Libyes tenentes scutum, et Lydii arripientes, et iacientes sagittas.

{46:10} For this is the day of the Lord, the God of hosts, a day of vengeance, so that he may vindicate himself of his enemies. The sword will devour, and be satiated, and be inebriated with their blood. For there is a victim of the Lord, the God of hosts, in the land of the north, beside the river Euphrates.

{46:11} Ascende in Galaad, et tolle resinam virgo filia Ægypti: frustra multiplicas medicamina, sanitas non erit tibi.
{46:11} Ascend to Gilead, and take its balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt! It is in vain that you multiply medicines; there will be no health for you!

{46:12} Audierunt gentes ignominiam tuam, et ululatus tuus replevit terram: quia fortis impegit in fortem, et ambo pariter conciderunt.
{46:12} The nations have heard of your disgrace, and your wailing has filled the earth. For the strong have stumbled against the strong, and both have fallen together.”

{46:15} Quare computruit fortis tuus? Non stetit: quoniam Dominus subvertit eum.
{46:15} Why have your strong ones decayed? They have not stood firm, because the Lord has overthrown them.

{46:16} Multiplicavit ruentes, ceciditque vir ad proximum suum: et dicent: Surge, et revertamur ad populum nostrum, et ad terram nativitatis nostræ, a facie gladii columbæ.
{46:16} He has multiplied those in ruin, and each man has fallen beside his neighbor. And they will say: ‘Rise up, and let us return to our own people and to the land of our nativity, away from the face of the sword of the dove.

~ This passage is about the time of the Antichrist, who will be from the kingdom of the North (formerly the northern part of the great monarch’s kingdom). He will use the symbol of a dove to represent either himself or his kingdom or his false prophetess.

{46:17} Vocate nomen Pharaonis regis Ægypti, tumultum adduxit tempus.
{46:17} Call the name of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt: ‘Time has brought tumult.’

~ In this context, a tumult is either an uprising, or merely civil chaos and confusion.

{46:18} Vivo ego (inquit Rex, Dominus exercituum nomen eius) quoniam sicut Thabor in montibus, et sicut Carmelus in mari, veniet.
{46:18} As I live, says the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts, just as Tabor is among the mountains, and just as Carmel is beside the sea, so will he come.

{46:19} Vasa transmigrationis fac tibi habitatrix filia Ægypti: quia Memphis in solitudinem erit, et deseretur, et inhabitabilis erit.
{46:19} Equip yourself for the transmigration, O daughter who inhabits Egypt. For Memphis will be in desolation, and it will be deserted and uninhabited.

{46:20} Vitula elegans atque formosa Ægyptus: stimulator ab Aquilone veniet ei.
{46:20} Egypt is like a stately and finely-formed calf. The one who will goad her will come from the north.

{46:21} Mercenarii quoque eius, qui versabantur in medio eius, quasi vituli saginati versi sunt, et fugerunt simul, nec stare potuerunt: quia dies interfectionis eorum venit super eos, tempus visitationis eorum.
{46:21} Her hired hands also, who move within her midst, like fatted calves have been turned back, and they have fled at the same time, and they are not able to stand firm. For the day of their passing away has overwhelmed them; it is the time of their visitation.

{46:22} Vox eius quasi æris sonabit: quoniam cum exercitu properabunt, et cum securibus venient ei, quasi cædentes ligna.
{46:22} Her voice will sound out like brass. For they will rush forward with an army, and with axes they will come against her, like those who chop wood.

{46:23} They have cut down her forest, says the Lord, which was not able to be counted. They have been multiplied more than locusts, and they are without number.

{46:24} Confusa est filia Ægypti, et tradita in manu populi Aquilonis.
{46:24} The daughter of Egypt has been confounded, and she has been delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

For behold, I will bring your salvation from afar, and your offspring from the land of your captivity. And Jacob will return and have rest, and he will prosper. {47:4} because of the arrival of the day on which all the Philistines will be devastated, and Tyre and Sidon will be destroyed, with all the rest of their helpers. For the Lord has depopulated the Philistines, the remnant of the island of Cappadocia.

{47:5} Venit calvitium super Gazam: conticuit Ascalon, et reliquiæ vallis earum, usquequo concideris?
{47:5} Baldness has arrived over Gaza. Ashkelon has been silenced, along with the remnant of their valley. And how long will you continue to be cut down?

{47:6} O mucro Domini usquequo non quiesces? Ingredere in vaginam tuam, refrigerare, et sile.
{47:6} O sharp sword of the Lord, how long will you be without rest? Enter your sheath; be refreshed and silenced.

{47:7} Quomodo quiescet cum Dominus præceperit ei adversus Ascalonem, et adversus maritimas eius regiones, ibique condixerit illi?
{47:7} But how can it find rest, when the Lord has ordered it against Ashkelon and against its maritime regions, and when a task has been appointed to it there?”

{48:3} A voice of clamor from Horonaim: devastation and great destruction!

{48:4} Contrita est Moab: annunciate clamorem parvulis eius.
{48:4} Moab has been crushed. Announce an outcry for her little ones.

{48:5} Per ascensum enim Luith plorans ascendet in fletu: quoniam in descensu Oronaim hostes ululatum contritionis audierunt:
{48:5} For, along the ascent of Luhith, the mourner will ascend with weeping. For, on the descent of Horonaim, the enemies have heard the wailing of devastation.

{48:6} Fugite, salvate animas vestras: et eritis quasi myricæ in deserto.
{48:6} Flee, save your lives! And you shall be like a saltcedar tree in the desert.

{48:7} Pro eo enim quod habuisti fiduciam in munitionibus tuis, et in thesauris tuis, tu quoque capieris: et ibit Chamos in transmigrationem, sacerdotes eius, et principes eius simul.
{48:7} For because you have had faith in your fortifications and in your storehouses, you too will be seized. And Chemosh will go into captivity: his priests and his leaders together.

{48:8} Et veniet prædo ad omnem urbem, et urbs nulla salvabitur: et peribunt valles, et dissipabuntur campestria: quoniam dixit Dominus:
{48:8} And the despoiler will overwhelm every city, and not a single city will be saved. And the valleys will perish, and the fields will be destroyed. For the Lord has spoken.

{48:9} Date florem Moab, quia florens egredietur: et civitates eius desertæ erunt, et inhabitabiles.
{48:9} Give a blossom to Moab. For it will depart when it is blossoming. And its cities will become desolate and uninhabited.

{48:10} Maledictus, qui facit opus Domini fraudulenter: et maledictus, qui prohibet gladium suum a sanguine.
{48:10} Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord deceitfully. And cursed is he who prohibits his sword from blood.

{48:14} How can you say: ‘We are strong and robust men of battle?’

{48:15} Vastata est Moab, et civitates illius succiderunt: et electi iuvenes eius descenderunt in occisionem: ait Rex, Dominus exercituum nomen eius.
{48:15} Moab has been devastated, and they have cut down her cities. And her elect young men have descended to slaughter. So says the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.

{48:16} Prope est interitus Moab ut veniat: et malum eius velociter accurret nimis.
{48:16} The passing away of Moab draws near and arrives. Its evil will rush forward with great speed.

{48:17} Consolamini eum omnes, qui estis in circuitu eius, et universi, qui scitis nomen eius, dicite: Quomodo confracta est virga fortis, baculus gloriosus?

{48:20} Moab has been confounded, because he has been conquered. Wail and cry out! Announce it in Arnon: Moab has been devastated,

{48:21} Et iudicium venit ad terram campestrem: super Helon, et super Iasa, et super Mephaath,
{48:21} and judgment has arrived upon the land of the plains: upon Holon, and upon Jahzah, and upon Mephaath,

{48:24} et super Carioth, et super Bosra: et super omnes civitates terræ Moab, quæ longe, et quæ prope sunt.
{48:24} and upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, those far away and those nearby.

{48:25} Abscissum est cornu Moab, et brachium eius contritum est, ait Dominus.
{48:25} The horn of Moab has been cut away, and his arm has been crushed, says the Lord.

{48:26} Inebriate eum, quoniam contra Dominum erectus est: et allidet manum Moab in vomitu suo, et erit in derisum etiam ipse:
{48:26} Inebriate him, for he has lifted himself up against the Lord. And Moab will thrust his hand into his own vomit, and also now he himself will become a derision.

{48:27} fuit enim in derisum tibi Israel: quasi inter fures reperisses eum: propter verba ergo tua, quæ adversum illum locutus es, captivus duceris.
{48:27} For Israel had been a derision to them. It was as if you had discovered him among thieves. Because of your own words, then, which you have spoken against him, you will be led away captive.

{48:28} Relinquite civitates, et habitate in petra habitatores Moab: et estote quasi columba nidificans in summo ore foraminis.
{48:28} Relinquish the cities, and live upon a rock, O inhabitants of Moab, and be like a dove nesting at the mouth of an opening at the summit.

{48:29} Audivimus superbiam Moab, superbus est valde: sublimitatem eius, et arrogantiam, et superbiam, et altitudinem cordis eius.
{48:29} We have listened to the arrogance of Moab; he is very proud: his exaltation, and arrogance, and pride, and the loftiness of his heart.

{48:30} Ego scio, ait Dominus, iactantiam eius: et quod non sit iuxta eam virtus eius, nec iuxta quod poterat conata sit facere.
{48:30} I myself know, says the Lord, his boasting, and that his ability is not in accord with it, nor is it in accord with what he has been striving to do.

{48:32} O vineyard of Sibmah, I will weep for you, with the mourning of Jazer. Your offshoots have crossed over the sea. They have reached even to the sea of Jazer. The despoiler has rushed over your harvest and your vintage.

{48:33} Ablata est lætitia et exultatio de Carmelo, et de Terra Moab, et vinum de torcularibus sustuli: nequaquam calcator uvæ solitum celeuma cantabit.
{48:33} Rejoicing and exultation has been taken away from Carmel and from the land of Moab. And I have taken the wine from the winepresses. The treader of grapes will no longer sing the usual rhythmic chant.

{48:34} De clamore Hesebon usque Eleale, et Iasa, dederunt vocem suam: a Segor usque ad Oronaim vitula conternante: aquæ quoque Nemrim pessimæ erunt.
{48:34} From the outcry of Heshbon, even to Elealeh and Jahzah, they have uttered their voice; from Zoar, even to Horonaim, like a three year old calf. So too, the waters of Nimrim will be very bad.

~ Heifers at three years old have gained enough weight to be ready for the slaughter.

{48:35} Et auferam de Moab, ait Dominus, offerentem in excelsis, et sacrificantem diis eius.
{48:35} And I will take away from Moab, says the Lord, the one who makes offerings in exalted places, and the one who sacrifices to his gods.

{48:36} Propterea cor meum ad Moab quasi tibiæ resonabit: et cor meum ad viros muri fictilis dabit sonitum tibiarum: quia plus fecit quam potuit, idcirco perierunt.
{48:36} Because of this, my heart will resound for Moab, like the pipes, and my heart will make a sound like the pipes for the men on the brick wall. For he has done more than he was able, yet still they have perished.

{48:37} Omne enim caput calvitium, et omnis barba rasa erit: in cunctis manibus colligatio, et super omne dorsum cilicium.
{48:37} For every head will be bald, and every beard will be shaved. All the hands will be bound together, and there will be haircloth on every back.

{48:38} Super omnia tecta Moab, et in plateis eius omnis planctus: quoniam contrivi Moab sicut vas inutile, ait Dominus.
{48:38} Over all the rooftops of Moab, and in its streets, everyone will mourn. For I have crushed Moab like a useless vessel, says the Lord.

{48:39} Quomodo victa est, et ululaverunt? Quomodo deiecit cervicem Moab, et confusus est? Eritque Moab in derisum, et in exemplum omnibus in circuitu suo.
{48:39} How was it conquered, so that they would wail? How is it that Moab has cast down his neck and been confounded? And Moab will be a derision and an example to everyone around him.”

{48:43} Pavor, et fovea, et laqueus super te, o habitator Moab, dicit Dominus.
{48:43} Terror and the pit and the snare will overwhelm you, O inhabitant of Moab, says the Lord.

{48:44} Qui fugerit a facie pavoris, cadet in foveam: et qui conscenderit de fovea, capietur laqueo: adducam enim super Moab annum visitationis eorum, ait Dominus.
{48:44} Whoever flees from the terror will fall into the pit. And whoever climbs out of the pit will be seized by the snare. For I will lead over Moab the year of their visitation, says the Lord.

{48:46} Woe to you, O Moab! You have been ruined, O people of Chemosh! For your sons and your daughters have been taken into captivity.

{48:47} But I will convert the captivity of Moab in the last days, says the Lord.” Such are the judgments of Moab thus far.

{49:6} And after this, I will cause the captives of the sons of Ammon to return, says the Lord.”

{49:7} Ad Idumæam. Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Numquid non ultra est sapientia in Theman? Periit consilium a filiis, inutilis facta est sapientia eorum.
{49:7} Against Idumea. Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Is there no longer any wisdom in Teman? Counsel has perished from the sons. Their wisdom has become useless.

{49:8} Fugite et terga vertite, descendite in voraginem habitatores Dedan: quoniam perditionem Esau adduxi super eum, tempus visitationis eius.
{49:8} Flee and turn your backs! Descend into the chasm, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I have brought the perdition of Esau over him, the time of his visitation.

{49:13} For I have sworn by myself, says the Lord, that Bozrah will be a desolation, and a disgrace, and a wasteland, and a curse. And all her cities will be a perpetual wilderness.

{49:14} Auditum audivi a Domino, et legatus ad gentes missus est: Congregamini, et venite contra eam, et consurgamus in prælium:
{49:14} I have heard a report from the Lord, and a legate has been sent to the nations: ‘Gather yourselves together, and go forth against her, and let us rise up to battle.’

{49:15} Ecce enim parvulum dedi te in gentibus contemptibilem inter homines.
{49:15} For behold, I have made you little among the nations, contemptible among men.

{49:16} Arrogantia tua decepit te, et superbia cordis tui: qui habitas in cavernis petræ, et apprehendere niteris altitudinem collis. Cum exaltaveris quasi aquila nidum tuum, inde detraham te, dicit Dominus.
{49:16} Your arrogance has deceived you, by the pride of your heart, you who live in the caverns of the rock and who strive to take hold of the height of the hill. But even if you make your nest like that of an eagle, I will pull you down from there, says the Lord.

{49:17} Et erit Idumæa deserta: omnis qui transibit per eam, stupebit, et sibilabit super omnes plagas eius.
{49:17} And Idumea will be a desert. Everyone who passes by it will be stupefied and will hiss over all its wounds.

{49:18} Sicut subversa est Sodoma, et Gomorrha, et vicinæ eius, ait Dominus: non habitabit ibi vir, et non incolet eam filius hominis.

{49:22} Ecce quasi aquila ascendet, et avolabit: et expandet alas suas super Bosran: et erit cor fortium Idumææ in die illa, quasi cor mulieris parturientis.
{49:22} Behold, he will ascend like an eagle and will fly. And he will spread his wings over Bozrah. And in that day, the heart of the strong ones of Idumea will be like the heart of a woman giving birth.”

{49:28} Against Kedar and against the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has struck down. Thus says the Lord: “Rise up and ascend to Kedar, and lay waste to the sons of the East.

{49:29} Tabernacula eorum, et greges eorum capient: pelles eorum, et omnia vasa eorum, et camelos eorum tollent sibi: et vocabunt super eos formidinem in circuitu.
{49:29} They will seize their tabernacles and their flocks. And they will take for themselves their tents, and all their vessels, and their camels. And they will call down a terror upon them on every side.

{49:30} Fugite, abite vehementer, in voraginibus sedete, qui habitatis Asor, ait Dominus: iniit enim contra vos Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis consilium, et cogitavit adversum vos cogitationes.
{49:30} Flee, go away urgently! Sit in deep pits, you who inhabit Hazor, says the Lord. For Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has undertaken a counsel against you, and he has devised plans against you.

{49:31} Consurgite, et ascendite ad gentem quietam, et habitantem confidenter, ait Dominus, non ostia, nec vectes eis: soli habitant.
{49:31} Rise up, and ascend to a nation that is quiet and lives in confidence, says the Lord. They have neither gates nor bars. They dwell alone.

{49:32} Et erunt cameli eorum in direptionem, et multitudo iumentorum in prædam: et dispergam eos in omnem ventum, qui sunt attonsi in comam: et ex omni confinio eorum adducam interitum super eos, ait Dominus.
{49:32} And their camels will be a spoil, and the multitude of their cattle will be a prey. And I will disperse, into every wind, those who have shaved their hair. And from all their confines, I will lead great destruction over them, says the Lord.

{49:33} Et erit Asor in habitaculum draconum, deserta usque in æternum: non manebit ibi vir, nec incolet eam filius hominis.
{49:33} And Hazor will be a habitation for serpents, deserted even unto eternity. No man will abide there, nor will a son of man tend it.”

{50:4} In those days and in that time, says the Lord, the sons of Israel will advance, they and the sons of Judah together. Weeping as they walk, they will hurry on, and they will seek the Lord their God.

{50:5} In Sion interrogabunt viam, huc facies eorum. Venient, et apponentur ad Dominum fœdere sempiterno, quod nulla oblivione delebitur.
{50:5} They will ask the way to Zion; their faces will be set toward this place. They will arrive and will be joined to the Lord by an everlasting covenant, which nothing will wipe away into oblivion.

{50:6} Grex perditus factus est populus meus: pastores eorum seduxerunt eos, feceruntque vagari in montibus: de monte in collem transierunt, obliti sunt cubilis sui.
{50:6} My people have become a lost flock. Their shepherds have led them astray and have caused them to wander in the mountains. They have crossed from mountain to hill. They have forgotten their resting place.

{50:7} Omnes, qui invenerunt, comederunt eos: et hostes eorum dixerunt: Non peccavimus: pro eo quod peccaverunt Domino decori iustitiæ, et expectationi patrum eorum Domino.
{50:7} All whom they have found, they have devoured. And their enemies have said: ‘We have not sinned. For it is they who have sinned against the Lord, the beauty of justice, and against the Lord, the hope of their fathers.’

{50:8} Withdraw from the midst of Babylon, and go forth from the land of the Chaldeans. And be like young goats before the flock.

{50:9} For behold, I am raising up, and I will lead against Babylon, a congregation of great nations from the land of the north. And they will be prepared against her, and from there she will be taken. Their arrows, like those of a strong man, a killer, will not return empty.

{50:10} Et erit Chaldæa in prædam: omnes vastantes eam replebuntur, ait Dominus.
{50:10} And Chaldea will become a prey. All who lay waste to her will be filled, says the Lord.

{50:11} Quoniam exultatis, et magna loquimini, diripientes hereditatem meam: quoniam effusi estis sicut vituli super herbam, et mugistis sicut tauri.
{50:11} For you exult and you speak great things, plundering my inheritance. For you have spread out like calves upon the grass, and you have bellowed like bulls.

{50:12} Confusa est mater vestra nimis, et adæquata pulveri, quæ genuit vos: ecce novissima erit in gentibus, deserta, invia, et arens.
{50:12} Your mother has been exceedingly shamed, and she who bore you has become equal to the dust. Behold, she will be the last among the nations, a desert, impassable and dry.

{50:13} Ab ira Domini non habitabitur, sed redigetur tota in solitudinem: omnis, qui transibit per Babylonem, stupebit, et sibilabit super universis plagis eius.
{50:13} By the wrath of the Lord, it will not be inhabited. Instead, it will be entirely desolate. Every one who passes by Babylon will be stupefied and will hiss over all her wounds.

{50:14} Præparamini contra Babylonem per circuitum omnes qui tenditis arcum; debellate eam, non parcatis iaculis: quia Domino peccavit.
{50:14} Prepare yourselves against Babylon, on every side, all you who bend the bow. Make war against her! You should not spare the arrows, for she has sinned against the Lord.

{50:15} Clamate adversus eam, ubique dedit manum, ceciderunt fundamenta eius, destructi sunt muri eius, quoniam ultio Domini est: ultionem accipite de ea, sicut fecit, facite ei.
{50:15} Cry out against her! For where she has put forth a hand, her foundations have fallen, her walls have been destroyed. For it is the vengeance of the Lord. Take vengeance against her! Just as she has done, do so to her.

{50:16} Disperdite satorem de Babylone, et tenentem falcem in tempore messis: a facie gladii columbæ unusquisque ad populum suum convertetur, et singuli ad terram suam fugient.
{50:16} Destroy the founder from Babylon, and the one who holds the sickle in the time of harvest. Before the face of the sword of the dove, each one will turn back to his people, and every one will flee to his own land.

{50:17} Grex dispersus Israel, leones eiecerunt eum: primus comedit eum rex Assur: iste novissimus exossavit eum Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis.
{50:17} Israel is a scattered flock. The lions have driven him away. First, the king of Assyria devoured him. And last, this Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has taken away his bones.

~ In the eschatological level of meaning, the first event, regarding the king of Assyria, refers to the first part of the tribulation (2009/2010 to March 29, 30, 31 of 2040), and the last event, regarding the king of Babylon, refers to the second part of the tribulation, which occurs prior to the return of Christ in 2437 A.D.

{50:18} Propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum Deus Israel: Ecce ego visitabo regem Babylonis, et terram eius, sicut visitavi regem Assur:
{50:18} Because of this, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will visit the king of Babylon and his land, just as I have visited the king of Assyria.

{50:19} et reducam Israel ad habitaculum suum: et pascetur Carmelum, et Basan, et in monte Ephraim, et Galaad saturabitur anima eius.
{50:19} And I will lead back Israel to his habitation. And he will pasture on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul will be satiated at mount Ephraim and Gilead.

{50:20} In diebus illis, et in tempore illo, ait Dominus: quæretur iniquitas Israel, et non erit: et peccatum Iuda, et non invenietur: quoniam propitius ero eis, quos reliquero.
{50:20} In those days and at that time, says the Lord, the iniquity of Israel will be sought, and there will be none. And the sin of Judah will be sought, and none will be found. For I will be forgiving to them, whom I will leave behind.

{50:21} Super terram dominantium ascende, et super habitatores eius visita, dissipa, et interfice quæ post eos sunt, ait Dominus: et fac iuxta omnia quæ præcepi tibi.
{50:21} Ascend against the land of the rulers, and visit against its inhabitants! Scatter and destroy whatever has been left behind them, says the Lord, and act according to all that I have instructed you.

{50:22} Vox belli in terra, et contritio magna.
{50:22} A voice of war in the land, and great destruction!

{50:23} Quomodo confractus est, et contritus malleus universæ terræ? Quomodo versa est in desertum Babylon in gentibus?
{50:23} How has the mallet of the entire earth been broken and crushed? How has Babylon been turned into a desert among the nations?

{50:24} Illaqueavi te, et capta es Babylon, et nesciebas: inventa es et apprehensa: quoniam Dominum provocasti.
{50:24} I have ensnared you, and you have been captured, O Babylon, and you did not realize it. You have been discovered and seized, because you provoked the Lord.

{50:25} Aperuit Dominus thesaurum suum, et protulit vasa iræ suæ: quoniam opus est Domino Deo exercituum in terra Chaldæorum.
{50:25} The Lord has opened his storehouse, and he has brought forth the instruments of his wrath. For there is work for the Lord, the God of hosts, within the land of the Chaldeans.

{50:26} Venite ad eam ab extremis finibus, aperite ut exeant qui conculcent eam: tollite de via lapides, et redigite in acervos, et interficite eam: nec sit quidquam reliquum.
{50:26} Advance against her from the furthest regions! Open, so that those who will trample her may go out! Take stones from the road, and gather them into piles, and destroy her. And let there be nothing left of her.

~ Road stones were pulled up, in ancient times, to be used in warfare.

{50:27} Dissipate universos fortes eius, descendant in occisionem: væ eis, quia venit dies eorum, tempus visitationis eorum.
{50:27} Scatter all her strong ones. Let them descend to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has arrived, the time of their visitation.

{50:28} Vox fugientium, et eorum, qui evaserunt de terra Babylonis, ut annuncient in Sion ultionem Domini Dei nostri, ultionem Templi eius.
{50:28} It is the voice of those who are fleeing and of those who have escaped from the land of Babylon: to announce in Zion the revenge of the Lord our God, the revenge of his Temple.

{50:29} Annunciate in Babylonem plurimis omnibus, qui tendunt arcum: consistite adversus eam per gyrum, et nullus evadat: reddite ei secundum opus suum: iuxta omnia quæ fecit, facite illi: quia contra Dominum erecta est, adversum Sanctum Israel.
{50:29} Announce it to the many in Babylon, to all who bend the bow. Stand together against her all around, and let no one escape. Repay her according to her work. In accord with all that she has done, do to her. For she has raised herself up against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel.

{50:30} Idcirco cadent iuvenes eius in plateis eius: et omnes viri bellatores eius conticescent in die illa, ait Dominus.
{50:30} For this reason, her young men will fall in her streets. And all her men of war will be silenced, in that day, says the Lord.

{50:31} Ecce ego ad te superbe, dicit Dominus Deus exercituum: quia venit dies tuus, tempus visitationis tuæ.
{50:31} Behold, I am against you, O proud one, says the Lord, the God of hosts. For your day has arrived, the time of your visitation.

{50:32} Et cadet superbus, et corruet, et non erit qui suscitet eum: et succendam ignem in urbibus eius, et devorabit omnia in circuitu eius.
{50:32} And the proud one will fall and be ruined. And there will be no one who may lift him up. And I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour everything around him.”

{50:33} Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Calumniam sustinent filii Israel, et filii Iuda simul: omnes, qui ceperunt eos, tenent, nolunt dimittere eos.
{50:33} Thus says the Lord of hosts: “The sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have endured calumny together. All who have seized them are holding them and refusing to release them.

{50:34} Redemptor eorum fortis, Dominus exercituum nomen eius, iudicio defendet causam eorum, ut exterreat terram, et commoveat habitatores Babylonis.
{50:34} Their redeemer is strong. The Lord of hosts is his name. He will defend their case in judgment, so that he may terrify the land and disturb the inhabitants of Babylon.

{50:35} Gladius ad Chaldæos, ait Dominus, et ad habitatores Babylonis, et ad principes, et ad sapientes eius.
{50:35} A sword is for the Chaldeans, says the Lord, and for the inhabitants of Babylon, and for her leaders, and for her wise ones.

{50:36} Gladius ad divinos eius, qui stulti erunt: gladius ad fortes illius, qui timebunt.
{50:36} A sword is for her diviners, who will be fooled. A sword is for her strong ones, who will be afraid.

{50:37} Gladius ad equos eius, et ad currus eius, et ad omne vulgus, quod est in medio eius: et erunt quasi mulieres: gladius ad thesauros eius, qui diripientur.
{50:37} A sword is for their horses, and for their chariots, and for all the common people who are in her midst. And they will be like women. A sword is for her storehouses, and they will be plundered.

{50:38} Siccitas super aquas eius erit, et arescent: quia terra sculptilium est, et in portentis gloriantur.
{50:38} A drought is over her waters, and they will be dried up. For it is a land of graven images, and they glory in portents.

~ This refers, in the eschatological level of meaning, to a drought and famine during the reign of the Antichrist.

{50:39} Propterea habitabunt dracones cum faunis ficariis: et habitabunt in ea struthiones: et non inhabitabitur ultra usque in sempiternum, nec extruetur usque ad generationem, et generationem.
{50:39} Because of this, dragons will live there with the fig fauns, and ostriches will live in it. And it will no longer be inhabited, even in perpetuity, nor will it be raised up, even from generation to generation.

{50:40} Sicut subvertit Dominus Sodomam et Gomorrham, et vicinas eius, ait Dominus: non habitabit ibi vir, et non incolet eam filius hominis.
{50:40} Just as the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and their neighboring towns, says the Lord, no man will live there, and a son of man will not tend it.

{50:41} Ecce populus venit ab Aquilone, et gens magna, et reges multi consurgent a finibus terræ.
{50:41} Behold, a people arrives from the north, and a great nation. And many kings will rise up from the ends of the earth.

{50:42} Arcum et scutum apprehendent: crudeles sunt et immisericordes: vox eorum quasi mare sonabit, et super equos ascendent: sicut vir paratus ad prælium contra te filia Babylon.
{50:42} They will take up the bow and the shield. They are cruel and merciless. Their voice will sound out, like the sea, and they will ride upon horses, like a man prepared for battle against you, O daughter of Babylon.

{50:43} Audivit rex Babylonis famam eorum, et dissolutæ sunt manus eius: angustia apprehendit eum, dolor quasi parturientem.
{50:43} The king of Babylon has heard the report about them, and his hands have been weakened. Anguish has overtaken him, like the pains of a woman giving birth.

{50:44} Ecce quasi leo ascendet de superbia Iordanis ad pulchritudinem robustam: quia subito currere faciam eum ad illam: et quis erit electus, quem præponam ei? Quis est enim similis mei? Et quis sustinebit me? Et quis est iste pastor, qui resistat vultui meo?
{50:44} Behold, he will ascend like a lion from the arrogance of the Jordan to the robust beauty. For I will cause him to rush upon her suddenly. And who will be the elect one, whom I may appoint over her? For who is like me? And who can endure me? And who is that pastor who can withstand my countenance?”

{50:45} Propterea audite consilium Domini, quod mente concepit adversum Babylonem: et cogitationes eius, quas cogitavit super terram Chaldæorum: Nisi detraxerint eos parvuli gregum, nisi dissipatum fuerit cum ipsis habitaculum eorum.
{50:45} Because of this, listen to the counsel of the Lord, which he has conceived in his mind against Babylon, and to his thoughts, which he has devised against the land of the Chaldeans: “Certainly the little ones of the flocks will pull them down, unless their habitation will have been destroyed with them.

{50:46} A voce captivitatis Babylonis commota est terra, et clamor inter gentes auditus est.
{50:46} At the voice of the captivity of Babylon, the earth has been moved, and an outcry has been heard among the nations.”

{51:1} Hæc dicit Dominus: Ecce ego suscitabo super Babylonem et super habitatores eius, qui cor suum levaverunt contra me, quasi ventum pestilentem.
{51:1} Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will raise up, over Babylon and over its inhabitants, who have lifted up their heart against me, something like a pestilent wind.

{51:2} Et mittam in Babylonem ventilatores, et ventilabunt eam et demolientur terram eius: quoniam venerunt super eam undique in die afflictionis eius.
{51:2} And I will send winnowers into Babylon, and they will winnow her, and they will demolish her land. For they will overwhelm her from every side in the day of her affliction.

{51:3} Let him who draws the bow, not draw his bow. And let him who wears armor, not rise up. Do not spare her young men. Destroy her entire military.

{51:4} And the slain will fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and the wounded in its regions.

{51:5} Quoniam non fuit viduatus Israel et Iuda a Deo suo Domino exercituum: terra autem eorum repleta est delicto a Sancto Israel.
{51:5} Yet Israel and Judah have not been widowed by their God, the Lord of hosts, though their land has been filled with transgression against the Holy One of Israel.

{51:6} Fugite de medio Babylonis, et salvet unusquisque animam suam: nolite tacere super iniquitatem eius: quoniam tempus ultionis est a Domino, vicissitudinem ipse retribuet ei.
{51:6} Flee from the midst of Babylon! And let each one save his own life. Do not be silent about her iniquity. For it is the time of revenge from the Lord. He himself will repay her, in her turn.

{51:7} Calix aureus Babylon in manu Domini, inebrians omnem terram: de vino eius biberunt Gentes, et ideo commotæ sunt.
{51:7} Babylon is a gold cup in the hand of the Lord, inebriating the entire earth. The nations have drunk from her wine, and therefore they have staggered.

{51:8} Subito cecidit Babylon, et contrita est: ululate super eam, tollite resinam ad dolorem eius, si forte sanetur.
{51:8} Suddenly, Babylon has fallen and been crushed. Wail over her! Take a balm to her pain, if perhaps she may be healed.”

{51:9} Curavimus Babylonem, et non est sanata: derelinquamus eam, et eamus unusquisque in terram suam: quoniam pervenit usque ad cælos iudicium eius, et elevatum est usque ad nubes.
{51:9} “We would have cured Babylon, but there is no cure. Let us abandon her, and let each one of us go to his own land. For her judgment has reached even to the heavens, and has been lifted up even to the clouds.

{51:10} Protulit Dominus iustitias nostras: venite, et narremus in Sion opus Domini Dei nostri.
{51:10} The Lord has brought forth our justices. Come and let us describe in Zion the work of the Lord our God.”

{51:11} Acuite sagittas, implete pharetras: suscitavit Dominus spiritum regum Medorum: et contra Babylonem mens eius est ut perdat eam, quoniam ultio Domini est, ultio templi sui.
{51:11} Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers. The Lord has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes. And his mind is against Babylon, so that he may destroy her. For this is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple.

{51:12} Super muros Babylonis levate signum, augete custodiam: levate custodes, præparate insidias: quia cogitavit Dominus, et fecit quæcumque locutus est contra habitatores Babylonis.
{51:12} Upon the walls of Babylon, lift up a sign. Increase the watch! Rouse the watchmen! Prepare ambushes! For the Lord has planned and has accomplished all that he has spoken, against the inhabitants of Babylon.

{51:13} Quæ habitas super aquas multas, locuples in thesauris: venit finis tuus pedalis præcisionis tuæ.
{51:13} You who live above many waters, rich in treasures: your end has arrived, your measure has been cut short.

~ In the phrase ‘pedalis præcisionis tuæ,’ pedalis refers to measuring a length by how many foot lengths, or by how many paces; but praecisionis refers to cutting off the front of something. So the phrase means that their time has been cut short.

{51:14} Iuravit Dominus exercituum per animam suam: Quoniam replebo te hominibus quasi brucho, et super te celeuma cantabitur.
{51:14} The Lord of hosts has sworn by himself, saying: “For I will fill you with men as with locusts, and they will sing a rhythmic chant against you.”

{51:15} Qui fecit terram in fortitudine sua, præparavit orbem in sapientia sua, et prudentia sua extendit cælos.
{51:15} The One who made the earth by his strength, who prepared the world by his wisdom, and who stretched out the heavens by his prudence:

{51:16} Dante eo vocem, multiplicantur aquæ in cælo: qui levat nubes ab extremo terræ, fulgura in pluviam fecit: et produxit ventum de thesauris suis.
{51:16} when he utters his voice, the waters will be multiplied in the heavens. The One who lifts up the clouds from the ends of the earth: he has turned lightning into rain, and he has brought forth wind from his storehouses.

{51:17} Stultus factus est omnis homo a scientia: confusus est omnis conflator in sculptili. Quia mendax est conflatio eorum, nec est spiritus in eis.
{51:17} Each man has become foolish before his own knowledge. Each sculptor has been confounded by his own sculpture. For what he has formed of them is a lie, and there is no spirit in them.

{51:18} Vana sunt opera, et risu digna, in tempore visitationis suæ peribunt.
{51:18} They are empty works, deserving of ridicule. In the time of their visitation, they will perish.

{51:19} Non sicut hæc pars Iacob: quia qui fecit omnia ipse est, et Israel sceptrum hereditatis eius: Dominus exercituum nomen eius.
{51:19} The portion of Jacob is not like their portion. For the One who made all things is his portion, and Israel is the scepter of his inheritance. The Lord of hosts is his name:

{51:20} Collidis tu mihi vasa belli, et ego collidam in te gentes, et disperdam in te regna:
{51:20} “For me, you strike together the instruments of war; and with you, I will strike together nations; and with you, I will scatter the kingdoms.

{51:21} et collidam in te equum, et equitem eius: et collidam in te currum, et ascensorem eius:
{51:21} And with you, I will strike together the horse and his rider; and with you, I will strike together the chariot and its rider.

{51:22} et collidam in te virum et mulierem: et collidam in te senem et puerum: et collidam in te iuvenem et virginem:
{51:22} And with you, I will strike together man and woman; and with you, I will strike together the old man and the boy; and with you, I will strike together the young man and the virgin.

{51:23} et collidam in te pastorem et gregem eius: et collidam in te agricolam et iugales eius: et collidam in te duces et magistratus.
{51:23} And with you, I will strike together the pastor and his flock; and with you, I will strike together the farmer and his yoke of oxen; and with you, I will strike together military leaders and civil leaders.

{51:24} Et reddam Babyloni, et cunctis habitatoribus Chaldææ omne malum suum, quod fecerunt in Sion, in oculis vestris, ait Dominus.
{51:24} And I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all their evil that they have done in Zion, before your eyes, says the Lord.

{51:25} Ecce ego ad te mons pestifer, ait Dominus, qui corrumpis universam terram: et extendam manum meam super te, et evolvam te de petris, et dabo te in montem combustionis.
{51:25} Behold, I am against you, you pestilent mountain, says the Lord, for you are corrupting the entire earth. And I will extend my hand over you, and I will roll you down from the rocks, and I will make you into a burning mountain.

{51:26} Et non tollent de te lapidem in angulum, et lapidem in fundamenta, sed perditus in æternum eris, ait Dominus.
{51:26} And they will not take from you a stone for the corner, nor a stone for the foundations. Instead, you will be destroyed unto eternity,” says the Lord.

{51:27} Levate signum in terra: clangite buccina in gentibus, sanctificate super eam gentes: annunciate contra illam regibus Ararat, Menni, et Ascenez: numerate contra eam Taphsar, adducite equum quasi bruchum aculeatum.
{51:27} Lift up a sign in the land! Sound the trumpet among the nations! Sanctify the nations against her. Announce against her the kings of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Number against her Taphsar. Lead in the horse, like the stinging locust.

{51:28} Sanctificate contra eam Gentes, reges Mediæ, duces eius, et universos magistratus eius, cunctamque terram potestatis eius.
{51:28} Sanctify the nations against her: the kings of Media, their military leaders, and all their civil leaders, and the entire land under their authority.

{51:29} Et commovebitur terra, et conturbabitur: quia evigilabit contra Babylonem cogitatio Domini ut ponat Terram Babylonis desertam et inhabitabilem.
{51:29} And the earth will be shaken and will be disturbed. For the plan of the Lord against Babylon will awaken, so that he may make the land of Babylon desolate and uninhabitable.

{51:30} Cessaverunt fortes Babylonis a prælio, habitaverunt in præsidiis: devoratum est robur eorum, et facti sunt quasi mulieres: incensa sunt tabernacula eius, contriti sunt vectes eius.
{51:30} The strong ones of Babylon have ceased to do battle. They have lived in fortresses. Their health has been devoured, and they have become like women. Her tabernacles have been set ablaze; her bars have been broken.

{51:31} Currens obviam currenti veniet: et nuncius obvius nuncianti: ut annunciet regi Babylonis quia capta est civitas eius a summo usque ad summum:
{51:31} Runner will go forth to meet runner, and messenger will meet messenger, so as to tell the king of Babylon that his city has been captured, from one end to the other,

{51:32} et vada præoccupata sunt, et paludes incensæ sunt igni, et viri bellatores conturbati sunt.
{51:32} and that the fords were seized in advance, and that the marshes have been burned with fire, and that the men of war have been set in disarray.

{51:33} Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: Filia Babylonis quasi area, tempus trituræ eius: adhuc modicum, et veniet tempus messionis eius.
{51:33} For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor. This is the time of her threshing. A little while longer, and the time of her harvest will arrive.”

{51:34} Comedit me, devoravit me Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis: reddidit me quasi vas inane, absorbuit me quasi draco, replevit ventrem suum teneritudine mea, et eiecit me.
{51:34} “Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has consumed me, has devoured me. He has made me like an empty vessel. He has swallowed me like a dragon. He has filled his belly with my tender ones, and he has cast me out.

{51:35} Iniquitas adversum me, et caro mea super Babylonem, dicit habitatio Sion: et sanguis meus super habitatores Chaldææ, dicit Ierusalem.
{51:35} This iniquity is against me, and so my flesh is upon Babylon,” says the habitation of Zion. “And my blood is upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,” says Jerusalem.

{51:36} Propterea hæc dicit Dominus: Ecce ego iudicabo causam tuam, et ulciscar ultionem tuam, et desertum faciam mare eius, et siccabo venam eius.
{51:36} Because of this, thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will judge your case, and I will avenge your vengeance, and I will make her sea into a desert, and I will dry up her spring.

{51:37} Et erit Babylon in tumulos, habitatio draconum, stupor, et sibilus, eo quod non sit habitator.
{51:37} And Babylon will become a tumult, the habitation of dragons, an astonishment, and a hissing, because there is no inhabitant.

{51:38} Simul ut leones rugient, excutient comas veluti catuli leonum.
{51:38} They will roar together, like lions, they will shake their manes, like young lions.

{51:39} In calore eorum ponam potus eorum, et inebriabo eos, ut sopiantur, et dormiant somnum sempiternum, et non consurgant, dicit Dominus.
{51:39} In their heat, I will give them a drink, and I will inebriate them, so that they become drowsy, and sleep an everlasting sleep, and do not rise up, says the Lord.

{51:40} Deducam eos quasi agnos ad victimam, et quasi arietes cum hœdis.
{51:40} I will lead them away, like lambs to the slaughter, and like rams with young goats.

{51:41} Quomodo capta est Sesach, et comprehensa est inclyta universæ terræ? Quomodo facta est in stuporem Babylon inter gentes?
{51:41} How was Sesac captured, and how was the renowned one of all the earth seized? How has Babylon become an astonishment among the nations?

{51:42} Ascendit super Babylonem mare, multitudine fluctuum eius operta est.
{51:42} The sea has ascended over Babylon; she has been covered by the multitude of its waves.

{51:43} Factæ sunt civitates eius in stuporem, terra inhabitabilis et deserta, terra in qua nullus habitet, nec transeat per eam filius hominis.
{51:43} Her cities have become an astonishment, an uninhabited and desolate land, a land in which no one may live, nor may a son of man pass through it.

{51:44} Et visitabo super Bel in Babylone, et eiiciam quod absorbuerat de ore eius, et non confluent ad eum ultra gentes, siquidem et murus Babylonis corruet.
{51:44} And I will visit against Bel in Babylon, and I will cast from his mouth what he has swallowed. And the nations will no longer flow together before him. For even the wall of Babylon will also fall.

{51:45} Egredimini de medio eius populus meus: ut salvet unusquisque animam suam ab ira furoris Domini.
{51:45} Go forth from her midst, my people, so that each one may save his life from the wrath of the fury of the Lord.

{51:46} Et ne forte mollescat cor vestrum, et timeatis auditum, qui audietur in terra: et veniet in anno auditio, et post hunc annum auditio: et iniquitas in terra, et dominator super dominatorem.
{51:46} For otherwise, your heart may faint, and you may be afraid at the news that is heard in the land. And the news will arrive within a year, and after that year more news will arrive. And iniquity will be in the land, and one ruler will be over another ruler.

{51:47} Propterea ecce dies veniunt, et visitabo super sculptilia Babylonis: et omnis terra eius confundetur, et universi interfecti eius cadent in medio eius.
{51:47} Because of this, behold, the days are approaching, when I will visit against the graven images of Babylon. And her entire land will be confounded, and all her slain will fall in her midst.

{51:48} Et laudabunt super Babylonem cæli et terra, et omnia quæ in eis sunt: quia ab Aquilone venient ei prædones, ait Dominus.
{51:48} And the heavens and the earth, and all the things that are in them, will give praise over Babylon. For despoilers will approach her from the north, says the Lord.

{51:49} Et quomodo fecit Babylon ut caderent occisi in Israel: sic de Babylone cadent occisi in universa terra.
{51:49} And in the manner that Babylon has caused the slain to fall in Israel, so the slain of Babylon will fall over the entire earth.

{51:50} Qui fugistis gladium, venite, nolite stare: recordamini procul Domini, et Ierusalem ascendat super cor vestrum.
{51:50} You who have fled from the sword, approach, do not stand still. Remember from afar the Lord, and let Jerusalem rise up in your heart.

{51:51} Confusi sumus, quoniam audivimus opprobrium: operuit ignominia facies nostras: quia venerunt alieni super sanctificationem domus Domini.
{51:51} We have been confounded, for we heard reproach. Shame has covered our faces, for strangers have overwhelmed the holiness of the house of the Lord.

{51:52} Propterea ecce dies veniunt, ait Dominus: et visitabo super sculptilia eius, et in omni terra eius mugiet vulneratus.
{51:52} Because of this, behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, when I will visit against her graven images, and within all her land the wounded will groan.

{51:53} Si ascenderit Babylon in cælum, et firmaverit in excelso robur suum: a me venient vastatores eius, ait Dominus.
{51:53} If Babylon were to ascend to heaven, and establish her strength on high, her despoilers would go forth from me, says the Lord.”

{51:54} Vox clamoris de Babylone, et contritio magna de Terra Chaldæorum:
{51:54} A voice of outcry from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!

{51:55} quoniam vastavit Dominus Babylonem, et perdidit ex ea vocem magnam: et sonabunt fluctus eorum quasi aquæ multæ: dedit sonitum vox eorum:
{51:55} For the Lord has despoiled Babylon, and he has perished the great voice from her. And their wave will make a sound like many waters. Their voice has uttered a noise.

{51:56} Quia venit super eam, id est super Babylonem prædo, et apprehensi sunt fortes eius, et emarcuit arcus eorum, quia fortis ultor Dominus reddens retribuet.
{51:56} For the despoiler has overwhelmed her, that is, Babylon, and her strong ones have been apprehended, and their bow has been weakened. For the Lord, the powerful revenger, will certainly repay.

{51:57} Et inebriabo principes eius, et sapientes eius, et duces eius, et magistratus eius, et fortes eius: et dormient somnum sempiternum, et non expergiscentur, ait Rex, Dominus exercituum nomen eius.
{51:57} “And I will inebriate her leaders, and her wise ones, and her military rulers, and her civil rulers, and her strong ones. And they will sleep an everlasting sleep, and they will not awaken,” says the King: the Lord of hosts is his name.

{51:58} Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Murus Babylonis ille latissimus suffossione suffodietur, et portæ eius excelsæ igni comburentur, et labores populorum ad nihilum, et gentium in ignem erunt, et disperibunt.
{51:58} Thus says the Lord of hosts: “That very wide wall of Babylon will be utterly overturned, and her exalted gates will be burned with fire, and the labors of the people will be as nothing, and the labors of the nations will be sent into the fire and will perish.”

{51:59} Verbum, quod præcepit Ieremias propheta, Saraiæ filio Neriæ filii Maasiæ cum pergeret cum Sedecia rege in Babylonem, in anno quarto regni eius: Saraias autem erat princeps prophetiæ.
{51:59} The word that Jeremiah, the prophet, instructed to Seraiah, the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he traveled with king Zedekiah into Babylon, in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was the leader of the prophets.

{51:60} Et scripsit Ieremias omne malum, quod venturum erat super Babylonem in libro uno: omnia verba hæc, quæ scripta sunt contra Babylonem.
{51:60} And Jeremiah wrote in one book all the evil that was to overwhelm Babylon; all these words were written against Babylon.

{51:61} Et dixit Ieremias ad Saraiam: Cum veneris in Babylonem, et videris, et legeris omnia verba hæc,
{51:61} And Jeremiah said to Seraiah: “When you will enter into Babylon, and you will see and read all these words,

{51:62} dices: Domine tu locutus es contra locum istum ut disperderes eum: ne sit qui in eo habitet ab homine usque ad pecus, et ut sit perpetua solitudo.
{51:62} you will say: ‘O Lord, you have spoken against this place so that you may destroy it, so that there would not be anyone, from man even to beast, who may live in it, and so that it may be desolate forever.’

{51:63} Cumque compleveris legere librum istum, ligabis ad eum lapidem, et proiicies illum in medium Euphraten:
{51:63} And when you will have completed reading this book, you will tie a stone to it, and you will cast it into the midst of the Euphrates.

{51:64} et dices: Sic submergetur Babylon, et non consurget a facie afflictionis, quam ego adduco super eam, et dissolvetur. Hucusque verba Ieremiæ.
{51:64} And you will say: ‘So shall Babylon be submerged! And she will not rise up before the face of the affliction that I will lead over her. And she will be broken.’ ” The words of Jeremiah thus far.

{52:1} Filius viginti et unius anni erat Sedecias cum regnare cœpisset: et undecim annis regnavit in Ierusalem, et nomen matris eius Amital, filia Ieremiæ de Lobna.
{52:1} Zedekiah was a son of twenty-one years when he first began to reign. And he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem. And the name of his mother was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah from Libnah.

~ The expression ‘son of’ followed by a number of years is a Hebrew expression indicating a person’s age.

{52:2} Et fecit malum in oculis Domini, iuxta omnia quæ fecerat Ioakim.
{52:2} And he did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord, in accord with all that Jehoiakim had done.

{52:3} Quoniam furor Domini erat in Ierusalem et in Iuda usquequo proiiceret eos a facie sua: et recessit Sedecias a rege Babylonis.
{52:3} And so the fury of the Lord was toward Jerusalem, and toward Judah, even until he cast them away from his face. And Zedekiah drew away from the king of Babylon.

{52:4} Factum est autem in anno nono regni eius, in mense decimo, decima mensis: Venit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, ipse et omnis exercitus eius adversus Ierusalem, et obsederunt eam, et ædificaverunt contra eam munitiones in circuitu.
{52:4} And it happened that, in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, he and his entire army, came against Jerusalem. And they besieged it, and they built fortifications against it, on every side.

{52:5} Et fuit civitas obsessa usque ad undecimum annum regis Sedeciæ.
{52:5} And the city was besieged, until the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.

{52:6} Mense autem quarto, nona mensis obtinuit fames civitatem: et non erant alimenta populo terræ.
{52:6} Then, in the fourth month, on the ninth of the month, a famine gripped the city. And there was no nourishment for the people of the land.

{52:7} Et dirupta est civitas, et omnes viri bellatores eius fugerunt, exieruntque de civitate nocte per viam portæ, quæ est inter duos muros, et ducit ad hortum regis (Chaldæis obsidentibus urbem in gyro) et abierunt per viam, quæ ducit in eremum.
{52:7} And the city was broken, and all the men of war fled, and they departed from the city at night by way of the gate which is between the two walls, and which leads to the king’s garden, while the Chaldeans were besieging the city all around, and they went away by the road that leads to the wilderness.

{52:8} Persecutus est autem Chadæorum exercitus regem: et apprehenderunt Sedeciam in deserto, quod est iuxta Iericho: et omnis comitatus eius diffugit ab eo.
{52:8} But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king. And they overtook Zedekiah in the desert which is near Jericho. And all of his companions fled away from him.

{52:9} Cumque comprehendissent regem, adduxerunt eum ad regem Babylonis in Reblatha, quæ est in terra Emath: et locutus est ad eum iudicia.
{52:9} And when they had captured the king, they led him away to the king of Babylon at Riblah, which is in the land of Hamath. And he spoke a judgment against him.

{52:10} Et iugulavit rex Babylonis filios Sedeciæ in oculis eius: sed et omnes principes Iuda occidit in Reblatha.
{52:10} And the king of Babylon cut the throats of the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also killed all the leaders of Judah at Riblah.

{52:11} Et oculos Sedeciæ eruit, et vinxit eum compedibus, et adduxit eum rex Babylonis in Babylonem, et posuit eum in domo carceris usque ad diem mortis eius.
{52:11} And he plucked out the eyes of Zedekiah, and he bound him with shackles, and the king of Babylon led him away to Babylon, and he placed him in the prison house, even until the day of his death.

{52:12} In mense autem quinto, decima mensis, ipse est annus nonusdecimus Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis: venit Nabuzardan princeps militiæ, qui stabat coram rege Babylonis in Ierusalem.
{52:12} Then, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, which is the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, arrived. And he was standing before the king of Babylon at Jerusalem.

{52:13} Et incendit domum Domini, et domum regis, et omnes domos Ierusalem, et omnem domum magnam igni combussit.
{52:13} And he set fire to the house of the Lord, and to the house of the king, and to all the houses of Jerusalem. And every great house he burned with fire.

{52:14} Et totum murum Ierusalem per circuitum destruxit cunctus exercitus Chaldæorum, qui erat cum magistro militiæ.
{52:14} And the entire army of the Chaldeans, who were with the chief of the military, destroyed the entire wall all around Jerusalem.

{52:15} De pauperibus autem populi, et de reliquo vulgo, quod remanserat in civitate, et de perfugis, qui transfugerant ad regem Babylonis, et ceteros de multitudine, transtulit Nabuzardan princeps militiæ.
{52:15} Then Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, took away some of the poor people, and some of the rest of the common people, who had remained in the city, and some of the fugitives, who had fled over to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.

{52:16} De pauperibus vero terræ reliquit Nabuzardan princeps militiæ vinitores, et agricolas.
{52:16} Yet truly, some of the poor of the land, Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, left behind as vinedressers and farmers.

{52:17} Columnas quoque æreas, quæ erant in domo Domini, et bases, et mare æneum, quod erat in domo Domini, confregerunt Chaldæi, et tulerunt omne æs eorum in Babylonem.
{52:17} The Chaldeans also broke apart the bronze pillars that were in the house of the Lord, and the bases, and the sea of brass that was in the house of the Lord. And they took all the brass of these things to Babylon.

{52:18} Et lebetes, et creagras, et psalteria, et phialas, et mortariola, et omnia vasa ærea, quæ in ministerio fuerant, tulerunt:
{52:18} And they took the cooking pots, and the hooks, and the psalteries, and the bowls, and the little mortars, and all the bronze vessels that had been used in the ministry.

{52:19} et hydrias, et thymiamateria, et urceos, et pelves, et candelabra, et mortaria, et cyathos: quotquot aurea, aurea: et quotquot argentea, argentea tulit magister militiæ:
{52:19} And the chief of the military took the water pots, and the censers, and the pitchers, and the basins, and the lampstands, and the mortars, and the little cups, whatever was gold, for the gold, and whatever was silver, for the silver,

{52:20} et columnas duas, et mare unum, et vitulos duodecim æreos, qui erant sub basibus, quas fecerat rex Salomon in domo Domini: non erat pondus æris omnium horum vasorum.
{52:20} as well as the two pillars, and the one brass sea, and the twelve oxen of brass that were under the bases, which king Solomon had made in the house of the Lord. There was no weight of brass left behind out of all these vessels.

{52:21} De columnis autem, decem et octo cubiti altitudinis erant in columna una, et funiculus duodecim cubitorum circuibat eam: porro grossitudo eius quattuor digitorum, et intrinsecus cava erat.
{52:21} Now concerning the pillars, one pillar was eighteen cubits high, and a cord of twelve cubits encircled it. Moreover, its thickness was four fingers, and the interior was hollow.

{52:22} Et capitella super utramque ærea: altitudo capitelli unius quinque cubitorum: et retiacula, et malogranata super coronam in circuitu, omnia ærea. Similiter columnæ secundæ, et malogranata.
{52:22} And heads of brass were upon both. And the height of one head was five cubits. And little nets with pomegranates were upon the heads all around, all of brass. The second pillar was similar, and the pomegranates.

{52:23} Et fuerunt malogranata nonaginta sex dependentia: et omnia malogranata centum, retiaculis circumdabantur.
{52:23} And there were ninety-six pomegranates hanging down; and there were one hundred pomegranates in all, surrounded by the little nets.

{52:24} Et tulit magister militiæ Saraiam sacerdotem primum, et Sophoniam sacerdotem secundum: et tres custodes vestibuli.
{52:24} And the chief of the military took Seraiah, the first priest, and Zephaniah, the second priest, and the three keepers of the vestibule.

{52:25} Et de civitate tulit eunuchum unum, qui erat præpositus super viros bellatores: et septem viros de his, qui videbant faciem regis, qui inventi sunt in civitate: et scribam principem militum, qui probabat tirones: et sexaginta viros de populo terræ, qui inventi sunt in medio civitatis.
{52:25} He also took from the city one eunuch who was in charge of the men of war, and seven men among those who served before the face of the king, who were found in the city, and a scribe, a leader of the military, who tested the new recruits, and sixty men from the people of the land, who were found in the midst of the city.

{52:26} Tulit autem eos Nabuzardan magister militiæ, et duxit eos ad regem Babylonis in Reblatha.
{52:26} Then Nebuzaradan, the chief of the military, took them, and he led them to the king of Babylon at Riblah.

{52:27} Et percussit eos rex Babylonis, et interfecit eos in Reblatha in terra Emath: et translatus est Iuda de terra sua.
{52:27} And the king of Babylon struck them and put them to death at Riblah, in the land of Hamath. And Judah was carried away from his land.

{52:28} Iste est populus, quem transtulit Nabuchodonosor: in anno septimo, Iudæos tria millia et viginti tres:
{52:28} This is the people whom Nebuchadnezzar carried away: in the seventh year, three thousand and twenty-three Jews;

{52:29} In anno octavo decimo Nabuchodonosor de Ierusalem animas octingentas triginta duas:
{52:29} in the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar, eight hundred thirty-two souls from Jerusalem;

{52:30} In anno vigesimo tertio Nabuchodonosor, transtulit Nabuzardan magister militiæ animas Iudæorum septingentas quadraginta quinque. Omnes ergo animæ, quattuor millia sexcentæ.
{52:30} in the twenty-third year of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuzaradan, the chief of the military, carried away of the Jews seven hundred forty-five souls. Therefore, all the souls were four thousand six hundred.

{52:31} Et factum est in trigesimo septimo anno transmigrationis Ioachin regis Iuda, duodecimo mense, vigesima quinta mensis, elevavit Evilmerodach rex Babylonis ipso anno regni sui, caput Ioachin regis Iuda, et eduxit eum de domo carceris.
{52:31} And it happened that, in the thirty-seventh year of the transmigration of Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-fifth of the month, Evilmerodach, the king of Babylon, in the very first year of his reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, and he brought him out of the prison house.

{52:32} Et locutus est cum eo bona, et posuit thronum eius super thronos regum, qui erant post se in Babylone.
{52:32} And he spoke with him for good, and he set his throne above the thrones of the kings who were after him in Babylon.

{52:33} Et mutavit vestimenta carceris eius, et comedebat panem coram eo semper cunctis diebus vitæ suæ:
{52:33} And he changed his prison garments, and he ate bread in his sight always, all the days of his life.

{52:34} et cibaria eius, cibaria perpetua dabantur ei a rege Babylonis statuta per singulos dies, usque ad diem mortis suæ cunctis diebus vitæ eius.
{52:34} And for his meals, a continual provision was allotted to him by the king of Babylon, a measure for every single day, until the day of his death, all the days of his life.
