1:1 アハシュエロスすなわちインドからエチオピヤまで百二十七州を治めたアハシュエロスの世、
1:1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)
1:2 アハシュエロス王が首都スサで、その国の位に座していたころ、
1:2 That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,
1:3 その治世の第三年に、彼はその大臣および侍臣たちのために酒宴を設けた。ペルシャとメデアの将軍および貴族ならびに諸州の大臣たちがその前にいた。
1:3 In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:
1:4 その時、王はその盛んな国の富と、その王威の輝きと、はなやかさを示して多くの日を重ね、百八十日に及んだ。
1:4 When he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.
1:5 これらの日が終った時、王は王の宮殿の園の庭で、首都スサにいる大小のすべての民のために七日の間、酒宴を設けた。
1:5 And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;
1:6 そこには白綿布の垂幕と青色のとばりとがあって、紫色の細布のひもで銀の輪および大理石の柱につながれていた。また長いすは金銀で作られ、石膏と大理石と真珠貝および宝石の切りはめ細工の床の上に置かれていた。
1:6 Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.
1:7 酒は金の杯で賜わり、その杯はそれぞれ違ったもので、王の大きな度量にふさわしく、王の用いる酒を惜しみなく賜わった。
1:7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.
1:8 その飲むことは法にかない、だれもしいられることはなかった。これは王が人々におのおの自分の好むようにさせよと宮廷のすべての役人に命じておいたからである。
1:8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.
1:9 王妃ワシテもまたアハシュエロス王に属する王宮の内で女たちのために酒宴を設けた。
1:9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.
1:10 七日目にアハシュエロス王は酒のために心が楽しくなり、王の前に仕える七人の侍従メホマン、ビズタ、ハルボナ、ビグタ、アバグタ、ゼタルおよびカルカスに命じて、
1:10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
1:11 王妃ワシテに王妃の冠をかぶらせて王の前にこさせよと言った。これは彼女が美しかったので、その美しさを民らと大臣たちに見せるためであった。
1:11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to show the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
1:12 ところが、王妃ワシテは侍従が伝えた王の命令に従って来ることを拒んだので、王は大いに憤り、その怒りが彼の内に燃えた。
1:12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very angry, and his anger burned in him.
1:13 そこで王は時を知っている知者に言った、――王はすべて法律と審判に通じている者に相談するのを常とした。
1:13 Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
1:14 時に王の次にいた人々はペルシャおよびメデアの七人の大臣カルシナ、セタル、アデマタ、タルシシ、メレス、マルセナ、メムカンであった。彼らは皆王の顔を見る者で、国の首位に座する人々であった――
1:14 And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)
1:15 「王妃ワシテは、アハシュエロス王が侍従をもって伝えた命令を行わないゆえ、法律に従って彼女にどうしたらよかろうか」。
1:15 What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she has not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
1:16 メムカンは王と大臣たちの前で言った、「王妃ワシテはただ王にむかって悪い事をしたばかりでなく、すべての大臣およびアハシュエロス王の各州のすべての民にむかってもしたのです。
1:16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen has not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
1:17 王妃のこの行いはあまねくすべての女たちに聞えて、彼らはついにその目に夫を卑しめ、『アハシュエロス王は王妃ワシテに、彼の前に来るように命じたがこなかった』と言うでしょう。
1:17 For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
1:18 王妃のこの行いを聞いたペルシャとメデアの大臣の夫人たちもまた、今日、王のすべての大臣たちにこのように言うでしょう。そうすれば必ず卑しめと怒りが多く起ります。
1:18 Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
1:19 もし王がよしとされるならば、ワシテはこの後、再びアハシュエロス王の前にきてはならないという王の命令を下し、これをペルシャとメデアの法律の中に書きいれて変ることのないようにし、そして王妃の位を彼女にまさる他の者に与えなさい。
1:19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
1:20 王の下される詔がこの大きな国にあまねく告げ示されるとき、妻たる者はことごとく、その夫を高下の別なく共に敬うようになるでしょう」。
1:20 And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
1:21 王と大臣たちはこの言葉をよしとしたので、王はメムカンの言葉のとおりに行った。
1:21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
1:22 王は王の諸州にあまねく書を送り、各州にはその文字にしたがい、各民族にはその言語にしたがって書き送り、すべて男子たる者はその家の主となるべきこと、また自分の民の言語を用いて語るべきことをさとした。
1:22 For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
2:1 これらのことの後、アハシュエロス王の怒りがとけ、王はワシテおよび彼女のしたこと、また彼女に対して定めたことを思い起した。
2:1 After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2:2 時に王に仕える侍臣たちは言った、「美しい若い処女たちを王のために尋ね求めましょう。
2:2 Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:
2:3 どうぞ王はこの国の各州において役人を選び、美しい若い処女をことごとく首都スサにある婦人の居室に集めさせ、婦人をつかさどる王の侍従ヘガイの管理のもとにおいて、化粧のための品々を彼らに与えてください。
2:3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
2:4 こうして御意にかなうおとめをとって、ワシテの代りに王妃としてください」。王はこの事をよしとし、そのように行った。
2:4 And let the maiden which pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
2:5 さて首都スサにひとりのユダヤ人がいた。名をモルデカイといい、キシのひこ、シメイの孫、ヤイルの子で、ベニヤミンびとであった。
2:5 Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
2:6 彼はバビロンの王ネブカデネザルが捕えていったユダの王エコニヤと共に捕えられていった捕虜のひとりで、エルサレムから捕え移された者である。
2:6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
2:7 彼はそのおじの娘ハダッサすなわちエステルを養い育てた。彼女には父も母もなかったからである。このおとめは美しく、かわいらしかったが、その父母の死後、モルデカイは彼女を引きとって自分の娘としたのである。
2:7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
2:8 王の命令と詔が伝えられ、多くのおとめが首都スサに集められて、ヘガイの管理のもとにおかれたとき、エステルもまた王宮に携え行かれ、婦人をつかさどるヘガイの管理のもとにおかれた。
2:8 So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
2:9 このおとめはヘガイの心にかなって、そのいつくしみを得た。すなわちヘガイはすみやかに彼女に化粧の品々および食物の分け前を与え、また宮中から七人のすぐれた侍女を選んで彼女に付き添わせ、彼女とその侍女たちを婦人の居室のうちの最も良い所に移した。
2:9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
2:10 エステルは自分の民のことをも、自分の同族のことをも人に知らせなかった。モルデカイがこれを知らすなと彼女に命じたからである。
2:10 Esther had not showed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not show it.
2:11 モルデカイはエステルの様子および彼女がどうしているかを知ろうと、毎日婦人の居室の庭の前を歩いた。
2:11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.
2:12 おとめたちはおのおの婦人のための規定にしたがって十二か月を経て後、順番にアハシュエロス王の所へ行くのであった。これは彼らの化粧の期間として、没薬の油を用いること六か月、香料および婦人の化粧に使う品々を用いること六か月が定められていたからである。
2:12 Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to know, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)
2:13 こうしておとめは王の所へ行くのであった。そしておとめが婦人の居室を出て王宮へ行く時には、すべてその望む物が与えられた。
2:13 Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.
2:14 そして夕方行って、あくる朝第二の婦人の居室に帰り、そばめたちをつかさどる王の侍従シャシガズの管理に移された。王がその女を喜び、名ざして召すのでなければ、再び王の所へ行くことはなかった。
2:14 In the evening she went, and on the next day she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.
2:15 さてモルデカイのおじアビハイルの娘、すなわちモルデカイが引きとって自分の娘としたエステルが王の所へ行く順番となったが、彼女は婦人をつかさどる王の侍従ヘガイが勧めた物のほか何をも求めなかった。エステルはすべて彼女を見る者に喜ばれた。
2:15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
2:16 エステルがアハシュエロス王に召されて王宮へ行ったのは、その治世の第七年の十月、すなわちテベテの月であった。
2:16 So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
2:17 王はすべての婦人にまさってエステルを愛したので、彼女はすべての処女にまさって王の前に恵みといつくしみとを得た。王はついに王妃の冠を彼女の頭にいただかせ、ワシテに代って王妃とした。
2:17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
2:18 そして王は大いなる酒宴を催して、すべての大臣と侍臣をもてなした。エステルの酒宴がこれである。また諸州に免税を行い、王の大きな度量にしたがって贈り物を与えた。
2:18 Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
2:19 二度目に処女たちが集められたとき、モルデカイは王の門にすわっていた。
2:19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king's gate.
2:20 エステルはモルデカイが命じたように、まだ自分の同族のことをも自分の民のことをも人に知らせなかった。エステルはモルデカイの言葉に従うこと、彼に養い育てられた時と少しも変らなかった。
2:20 Esther had not yet showed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like when she was brought up with him.
2:21 そのころ、モルデカイが王の門にすわっていた時、王の侍従で、王のへやの戸を守る者のうちのビグタンとテレシのふたりが怒りのあまりアハシュエロス王を殺そうとねらっていたが、
2:21 In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were angry, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.
2:22 その事がモルデカイに知れたので、彼はこれを王妃エステルに告げ、エステルはこれをモルデカイの名をもって王に告げた。
2:22 And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name.
2:23 その事が調べられて、それに相違ないことがあらわれたので、彼らふたりは木にかけられた。この事は王の前で日誌の書にかきしるされた。
2:23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
3:1 これらの事の後、アハシュエロス王はアガグびとハンメダタの子ハマンを重んじ、これを昇進させて、自分と共にいるすべての大臣たちの上にその席を定めさせた。
3:1 After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.
3:2 王の門の内にいる王の侍臣たちは皆ひざまずいてハマンに敬礼した。これは王が彼についてこうすることを命じたからである。しかしモルデカイはひざまずかず、また敬礼しなかった。
3:2 And all the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.
3:3 そこで王の門にいる王の侍臣たちはモルデカイにむかって、「あなたはどうして王の命令にそむくのか」と言った。
3:3 Then the king's servants, which were in the king's gate, said unto Mordecai, Why trangress you the king's commandment?
3:4 彼らは毎日モルデカイにこう言うけれども聞きいれなかったので、その事がゆるされるかどうかを見ようと、これをハマンに告げた。なぜならモルデカイはすでに自分のユダヤ人であることを彼らに語ったからである。
3:4 Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai's matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a Jew.
3:5 ハマンはモルデカイのひざまずかず、また自分に敬礼しないのを見て怒りに満たされたが、
3:5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.
3:6 ただモルデカイだけを殺すことを潔しとしなかった。彼らがモルデカイの属する民をハマンに知らせたので、ハマンはアハシュエロスの国のうちにいるすべてのユダヤ人、すなわちモルデカイの属する民をことごとく滅ぼそうと図った。
3:6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had showed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
3:7 アハシュエロス王の第十二年の正月すなわちニサンの月に、ハマンの前で、十二月すなわちアダルの月まで、一日一日のため、一月一月のために、プルすなわちくじを投げさせた。
3:7 In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.
3:8 そしてハマンはアハシュエロス王に言った、「お国の各州にいる諸民のうちに、散らされて、別れ別れになっている一つの民がいます。その法律は他のすべての民のものと異なり、また彼らは王の法律を守りません。それゆえ彼らを許しておくことは王のためになりません。
3:8 And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of your kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it is not for the king's profit to suffer them.
3:9 もし王がよしとされるならば、彼らを滅ぼせと詔をお書きください。そうすればわたしは王の事をつかさどる者たちの手に銀一万タラントを量りわたして、王の金庫に入れさせましょう」。
3:9 If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.
3:10 そこで王は手から指輪をはずし、アガグびとハンメダタの子で、ユダヤ人の敵であるハマンにわたした。
3:10 And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy.
3:11 そして王はハマンに言った、「その銀はあなたに与える。その民もまたあなたに与えるから、よいと思うようにしなさい」。
3:11 And the king said unto Haman, The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.
3:12 そこで正月の十三日に王の書記官が召し集められ、王の総督、各州の知事および諸民のつかさたちにハマンが命じたことをことごとく書きしるした。すなわち各州に送るものにはその文字を用い、諸民に送るものにはその言語を用い、おのおのアハシュエロス王の名をもってそれを書き、王の指輪をもってそれに印を押した。
3:12 Then were the king's scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king's ring.
3:13 そして急使をもってその書を王の諸州に送り、十二月すなわちアダルの月の十三日に、一日のうちにすべてのユダヤ人を、若い者、老いた者、子供、女の別なく、ことごとく滅ぼし、殺し、絶やし、かつその貨財を奪い取れと命じた。
3:13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.
3:14 この文書の写しを詔として各州に伝え、すべての民に公示して、その日のために備えさせようとした。
3:14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day.
3:15 急使は王の命令により急いで出ていった。この詔は首都スサで発布された。時に王とハマンは座して酒を飲んでいたが、スサの都はあわて惑った。
3:15 The posts went out, being hastened by the king's commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.
4:1 モルデカイはすべてこのなされたことを知ったとき、その衣を裂き、荒布をまとい、灰をかぶり、町の中へ行って大声をあげ、激しく叫んで、
4:1 When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
4:2 王の門の入口まで行った。荒布をまとっては王の門の内にはいることができないからである。
4:2 And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
4:3 すべて王の命令と詔をうけ取った各州ではユダヤ人のうちに大いなる悲しみがあり、断食、嘆き、叫びが起り、また荒布をまとい、灰の上に座する者が多かった。
4:3 And in every province, anywhere the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
4:4 エステルの侍女たちおよび侍従たちがきて、この事を告げたので、王妃は非常に悲しみ、モルデカイに着物を贈り、それを着せて、荒布を脱がせようとしたが受けなかった。
4:4 So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.
4:5 そこでエステルは王の侍従のひとりで、王が自分にはべらせたハタクを召し、モルデカイのもとへ行って、それは何事であるか、何ゆえであるかを尋ねて来るようにと命じた。
4:5 Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
4:6 ハタクは出て、王の門の前にある町の広場にいるモルデカイのもとへ行くと、
4:6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.
4:7 モルデカイは自分の身に起ったすべての事を彼に告げ、かつハマンがユダヤ人を滅ぼすことのために王の金庫に量り入れると約束した銀の正確な額を告げた。
4:7 And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.
4:8 また彼らを滅ぼさせるために、スサで発布された詔書の写しを彼にわたし、それをエステルに見せ、かつ説きあかし、彼女が王のもとへ行ってその民のために王のあわれみを請い、王の前に願い求めるように彼女に言い伝えよと言った。
4:8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to show it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.
4:9 ハタクが帰ってきてモルデカイの言葉をエステルに告げたので、
4:9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.
4:10 エステルはハタクに命じ、モルデカイに言葉を伝えさせて言った、
4:10 Again Esther spoke unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
4:11 「王の侍臣および王の諸州の民は皆、男でも女でも、すべて召されないのに内庭にはいって王のもとへ行く者は、必ず殺されなければならないという一つの法律のあることを知っています。ただし王がその者に金の笏を伸べれば生きることができるのです。しかしわたしはこの三十日の間、王のもとへ行くべき召をこうむらないのです」。
4:11 All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or women, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
4:12 エステルの言葉をモルデカイに告げたので、
4:12 And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.
4:13 モルデカイは命じてエステルに答えさせて言った、「あなたは王宮にいるゆえ、すべてのユダヤ人と異なり、難を免れるだろうと思ってはならない。
4:13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with yourself that you shall escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.
4:14 あなたがもし、このような時に黙っているならば、ほかの所から、助けと救がユダヤ人のために起るでしょう。しかし、あなたとあなたの父の家とは滅びるでしょう。あなたがこの国に迎えられたのは、このような時のためでなかったとだれが知りましょう」。
4:14 For if you altogether hold your peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but you and your father's house shall be destroyed: and who knows whether you are come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
4:15 そこでエステルは命じてモルデカイに答えさせた、
4:15 Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,
4:16 「あなたは行ってスサにいるすべてのユダヤ人を集め、わたしのために断食してください。三日のあいだ夜も昼も食い飲みしてはなりません。わたしとわたしの侍女たちも同様に断食しましょう。そしてわたしは法律にそむくことですが王のもとへ行きます。わたしがもし死なねばならないのなら、死にます」。
4:16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast all of you for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
4:17 モルデカイは行って、エステルがすべて自分に命じたとおりに行った。
4:17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
5:1 三日目にエステルは王妃の服を着、王宮の内庭に入り、王の広間にむかって立った。王は王宮の玉座に座して王宮の入口にむかっていたが、
5:1 Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king's house, opposite to the king's house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, opposite to the gate of the house.
5:2 王妃エステルが庭に立っているのを見て彼女に恵みを示し、その手にある金の笏をエステルの方に伸ばしたので、エステルは進みよってその笏の頭にさわった。
5:2 And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.
5:3 王は彼女に言った、「王妃エステルよ、何を求めるのか。あなたの願いは何か。国の半ばでもあなたに与えよう」。
5:3 Then said the king unto her, What will you, queen Esther? and what is your request? it shall be even given you to the half of the kingdom.
5:4 エステルは言った、「もし王がよしとされるならば、きょうわたしが王のために設けた酒宴に、ハマンとご一緒にお臨みください」。
5:4 And Esther answered, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him.
5:5 そこで王は「ハマンを速く連れてきて、エステルの言うようにせよ」と言い、やがて王とハマンはエステルの設けた酒宴に臨んだ。
5:5 Then the king said, Cause Haman to make haste, that he may do as Esther has said. So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
5:6 酒宴の時、王はエステルに言った、「あなたの求めることは何か。必ず聞かれる。あなたの願いは何か。国の半ばでも聞きとどけられる」。
5:6 And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, What is your petition? and it shall be granted you: and what is your request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.
5:7 エステルは答えて言った、「わたしの求め、わたしの願いはこれです。
5:7 Then answered Esther, and said, My petition and my request is;
5:8 もしわたしが王の目の前に恵みを得、また王がもしわたしの求めを許し、わたしの願いを聞きとどけるのをよしとされるならば、ハマンとご一緒に、あすまた、わたしが設けようとする酒宴に、お臨みください。わたしはあす王のお言葉どおりにいたしましょう」。
5:8 If I have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do tomorrow as the king has said.
5:9 こうしてハマンはその日、心に喜び楽しんで出てきたが、ハマンはモルデカイが王の門にいて、自分にむかって立ちあがりもせず、また身動きもしないのを見たので、モルデカイに対し怒りに満たされた。
5:9 Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart: but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full of indignation against Mordecai.
5:10 しかしハマンは耐え忍んで家に帰り、人をやってその友だちおよび妻ゼレシを呼んでこさせ、
5:10 Nevertheless Haman refrained himself: and when he came home, he sent and called for his friends, and Zeresh his wife.
5:11 そしてハマンはその富の栄華と、そのむすこたちの多いことと、すべて王が自分を重んじられたこと、また王の大臣および侍臣たちにまさって自分を昇進させられたことを彼らに語った。
5:11 And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.
5:12 ハマンはまた言った、「王妃エステルは酒宴を設けたが、わたしのほかはだれも王と共にこれに臨ませなかった。あすもまたわたしは王と共に王妃に招かれている。
5:12 Haman said moreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and tomorrow am I invited unto her also with the king.
5:13 しかしユダヤ人モルデカイが王の門に座しているのを見る間は、これらの事もわたしには楽しくない」。
5:13 Yet all this avails me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.
5:14 その時、妻ゼレシとすべての友は彼に言った、「高さ五十キュビトの木を立てさせ、あすの朝、モルデカイをその上に掛けるように王に申し上げなさい。そして王と一緒に楽しんでその酒宴においでなさい」。ハマンはこの事をよしとして、その木を立てさせた。
5:14 Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and tomorrow speak you unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then go you in merrily with the king unto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.
6:1 その夜、王は眠ることができなかったので、命じて日々の事をしるした記録の書を持ってこさせ、王の前で読ませたが、
6:1 On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.
6:2 その中に、モルデカイがかつて王の侍従で、王のへやの戸を守る者のうちのビグタナとテレシのふたりが、アハシュエロス王を殺そうとねらっていることを告げた、としるされているのを見いだした。
6:2 And it was found written, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, the keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.
6:3 そこで王は言った、「この事のために、どんな栄誉と爵位をモルデカイに与えたか」。王に仕える侍臣たちは言った、「何も彼に与えていません」。
6:3 And the king said, What honour and dignity has been done to Mordecai for this? Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.
6:4 王は言った、「庭にいるのはだれか」。この時ハマンはモルデカイのために設けた木にモルデカイを掛けることを王に申し上げようと王宮の外庭にはいってきていた。
6:4 And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king's house, to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.
6:5 王の侍臣たちが「ハマンが庭に立っています」と王に言ったので、王は「ここへ、はいらせよ」と言った。
6:5 And the king's servants said unto him, Behold, Haman stands in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.
6:6 やがてハマンがはいって来ると王は言った、「王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはどうしたらよかろうか」。ハマンは心のうちに言った、「王はわたし以外にだれに栄誉を与えようと思われるだろうか」。
6:6 So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delights to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?
6:7 ハマンは王に言った、「王が栄誉を与えようと思われる人のためには、
6:7 And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delights to honour,
6:8 王の着られた衣服を持ってこさせ、また王の乗られた馬、すなわちその頭に王冠をいただいた馬をひいてこさせ、
6:8 Let the royal apparel be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides upon, and the crown royal which is set upon his head:
6:9 その衣服と馬とを王の最も尊い大臣のひとりの手にわたして、王が栄誉を与えようと思われる人にその衣服を着させ、またその人を馬に乗せ、町の広場を導いて通らせ、『王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはこうするのだ』とその前に呼ばわらせなさい」。
6:9 And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array the man likewise whom the king delights to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honour.
6:10 それで王はハマンに言った、「急いであなたが言ったように、その衣服と馬とを取り寄せ、王の門に座しているユダヤ人モルデカイにそうしなさい。あなたが言ったことを一つも欠いてはならない」。
6:10 Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as you have said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew, that sits at the king's gate: let nothing fail of all that you have spoken.
6:11 そこでハマンは衣服と馬とを取り寄せ、モルデカイにその衣服を着せ、彼を馬に乗せて町の広場を通らせ、その前に呼ばわって、「王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはこうするのだ」と言った。
6:11 Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delights to honour.
6:12 こうしてモルデカイは王の門に帰ってきたが、ハマンは憂え悩み、頭をおおって急いで家に帰った。
6:12 And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered.
6:13 そしてハマンは自分の身に起った事をことごとくその妻ゼレシと友だちに告げた。するとその知者たちおよび妻ゼレシは彼に言った、「あのモルデカイ、すなわちあなたがその人の前に敗れ始めた者が、もしユダヤ人の子孫であるならば、あなたは彼に勝つことはできない。必ず彼の前に敗れるでしょう」。
6:13 And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom you have begun to fall, you shall not prevail against him, but shall surely fall before him.
6:14 彼らがなおハマンと話している時、王の侍従たちがきてハマンを促し、エステルが設けた酒宴に臨ませた。
6:14 And while they were yet talking with him, came the king's chamberlains, and hasted to bring Haman unto the banquet that Esther had prepared.
7:1 王とハマンは王妃エステルの酒宴に臨んだ。
7:1 So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.
7:2 このふつか目の酒宴に王はまたエステルに言った、「王妃エステルよ、あなたの求めることは何か。必ず聞かれる。あなたの願いは何か。国の半ばでも聞きとどけられる」。
7:2 And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is your petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted you: and what is your request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.
7:3 王妃エステルは答えて言った、「王よ、もしわたしが王の目の前に恵みを得、また王がもしよしとされるならば、わたしの求めにしたがってわたしの命をわたしに与え、またわたしの願いにしたがってわたしの民をわたしに与えてください。
7:3 Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in your sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:
7:4 わたしとわたしの民は売られて滅ぼされ、殺され、絶やされようとしています。もしわたしたちが男女の奴隷として売られただけなら、わたしは黙っていたでしょう。わたしたちの難儀は王の損失とは比較にならないからです」。
7:4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.
7:5 アハシュエロス王は王妃エステルに言った、「そんな事をしようと心にたくらんでいる者はだれか。またどこにいるのか」。
7:5 Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?
7:6 エステルは言った、「そのあだ、その敵はこの悪いハマンです」。そこでハマンは王と王妃の前に恐れおののいた。
7:6 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.
7:7 王は怒って酒宴の席を立ち、宮殿の園へ行ったが、ハマンは残って王妃エステルに命ごいをした。彼は王が自分に害を加えようと定めたのを見たからである。
7:7 And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.
7:8 王が宮殿の園から酒宴の場所に帰ってみると、エステルのいた長いすの上にハマンが伏していたので、王は言った、「彼はまたわたしの家で、しかもわたしの前で王妃をはずかしめようとするのか」。この言葉が王の口から出たとき、人々は、ハマンの顔をおおった。
7:8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
7:9 その時、王に付き添っていたひとりの侍従ハルボナが「王のためによい事を告げたあのモルデカイのためにハマンが用意した高さ五十キュビトの木がハマンの家に立っています」と言ったので、王は「彼をそれに掛けよ」と言った。
7:9 And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who spoken good for the king, stands in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.
7:10 そこで人々はハマンをモルデカイのために備えてあったその木に掛けた。こうして王の怒りは和らいだ。
7:10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.
8:1 その日アハシュエロス王は、ユダヤ人の敵ハマンの家を王妃エステルに与えた。モルデカイは王の前にきた。これはエステルが自分とモルデカイがどんな関係の者であるかを告げたからである。
8:1 On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.
8:2 王はハマンから取り返した自分の指輪をはずして、モルデカイに与えた。エステルはモルデカイにハマンの家を管理させた。
8:2 And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.
8:3 エステルは再び王の前に奏し、その足もとにひれ伏して、アガグびとハマンの陰謀すなわち彼がユダヤ人に対して企てたその計画を除くことを涙ながらに請い求めた。
8:3 And Esther spoke yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews.
8:4 王はエステルにむかって金の笏を伸べたので、エステルは身を起して王の前に立ち、
8:4 Then the king held out the golden sceptre toward Esther. So Esther arose, and stood before the king,
8:5 そして言った、「もし王がよしとされ、わたしが王の前に恵みを得、またこの事が王の前に正しいと見え、かつわたしが王の目にかなうならば、アガグびとハンメダタの子ハマンが王の諸州にいるユダヤ人を滅ぼそうとはかって書き送った書を取り消す旨を書かせてください。
8:5 And said, If it please the king, and if I have favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king's provinces:
8:6 どうしてわたしは、わたしの民に臨もうとする災を、だまって見ていることができましょうか。どうしてわたしの同族の滅びるのを、だまって見ていることができましょうか」。
8:6 For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?
8:7 アハシュエロス王は王妃エステルとユダヤ人モルデカイに言った、「ハマンがユダヤ人を殺そうとしたので、わたしはハマンの家をエステルに与え、またハマンを木に掛けさせた。
8:7 Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews.
8:8 あなたがたは自分たちの思うままに王の名をもってユダヤ人についての書をつくり、王の指輪をもってそれに印を押すがよい。王の名をもって書き、王の指輪をもって印を押した書はだれも取り消すことができない」。
8:8 Write all of you also for the Jews, as it likes you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.
8:9 その時王の書記官が召し集められた。それは三月すなわちシワンの月の二十三日であった。そしてインドからエチオピヤまでの百二十七州にいる総督、諸州の知事および大臣たちに、モルデカイがユダヤ人について命じたとおりに書き送った。すなわち各州にはその文字を用い、各民族にはその言語を用いて書き送り、ユダヤ人に送るもにはその文字と言語とを用いた。
8:9 Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.
8:10 その書はアハシュエロス王の名をもって書かれ、王の指輪をもって印を押し、王の御用馬として、そのうまやに育った早馬に乗る急使によって送られた。
8:10 And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus' name, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries:
8:11 その中で、王はすべての町にいるユダヤ人に、彼らが相集まって自分たちの生命を保護し、自分たちを襲おうとする諸国、諸州のすべての武装した民を、その妻子もろともに滅ぼし、殺し、絶やし、かつその貨財を奪い取ることを許した。
8:11 Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,
8:12 ただしこの事をアハシュエロス王の諸州において、十二月すなわちアダルの月の十三日に、一日のうちに行うことを命じた。
8:12 Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.
8:13 この書いた物の写しを詔として各州に伝え、すべての民に公示して、ユダヤ人に、その日のために備えして、その敵にあだをかえさせようとした。
8:13 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.
8:14 王の御用馬である早馬に乗った急使は、王の命によって急がされ、せきたてられて出て行った。この詔は首都スサで出された。
8:14 So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace.
8:15 モルデカイは青と白の朝服を着、大きな金の冠をいただき、紫色の細布の上着をまとって王の前から出て行った。スサの町中、声をあげて喜んだ。
8:15 And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.
8:16 ユダヤ人には光と喜びと楽しみと誉があった。
8:16 The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honour.
8:17 いずれの州でも、いずれの町でも、すべて王の命令と詔の伝達された所では、ユダヤ人は喜び楽しみ、酒宴を開いてこの日を祝日とした。そしてこの国の民のうち多くの者がユダヤ人となった。これはユダヤ人を恐れる心が彼らのうちに起ったからである。
8:17 And in every province, and in every city, anywhere the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.
9:1 十二月すなわちアダルの月の十三日、王の命令と詔の行われる時が近づいたとき、すなわちユダヤ人の敵が、ユダヤ人を打ち伏せようと望んでいたのに、かえってユダヤ人が自分たちを憎む者を打ち伏せることとなったその日に、
9:1 Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)
9:2 ユダヤ人はアハシュエロス王の各州にある自分たちの町々に集まり、自分たちに害を加えようとする者を殺そうとしたが、だれもユダヤ人に逆らうことのできるものはなかった。すべての民がユダヤ人を恐れたからである。
9:2 The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
9:3 諸州の大臣、総督、知事および王の事をつかさどる者は皆ユダヤ人を助けた。彼らはモルデカイを恐れたからである。
9:3 And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
9:4 モルデカイは王の家で大いなる者となり、その名声は各州に聞えわたった。この人モルデカイがますます勢力ある者となったからである。
9:4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.
9:5 そこでユダヤ人はつるぎをもってすべての敵を撃って殺し、滅ぼし、自分たちを憎む者に対し心のままに行った。
9:5 Thus the Jews stroke all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.
9:6 ユダヤ人はまた首都スサにおいても五百人を殺し、滅ぼした。
9:6 And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.
9:7 またパルシャンダタ、ダルポン、アスパタ、
9:7 And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,
9:8 ポラタ、アダリヤ、アリダタ、
9:8 And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,
9:9 パルマシタ、アリサイ、アリダイ、ワエザタ、
9:9 And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,
9:10 すなわちハンメダタの子で、ユダヤ人の敵であるハマンの十人の子をも殺した。しかし、そのぶんどり物には手をかけなかった。
9:10 The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.
9:11 その日、首都スサで殺された者の数が王に報告されると、
9:11 On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.
9:12 王は王妃エステルに言った、「ユダヤ人は首都スサで五百人を殺し、またハマンの十人の子を殺した。王のその他の諸州ではどんなに彼らは殺したことであろう。さてあなたの求めることは何か。必ず聞かれる。更にあなたの願いは何か。必ず聞きとどけられる」。
9:12 And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? now what is your petition? and it shall be granted you: or what is your request further? and it shall be done.
9:13 エステルは言った、「もし王がよしとされるならば、どうぞスサにいるユダヤ人にあすも、きょうの詔のように行うことをゆるしてください。かつハマンの十人の子を木に掛けさせてください」。
9:13 Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according unto this day's decree, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.
9:14 王はそうせよと命じたので、スサにおいて詔が出て、ハマンの十人の子は木に掛けられた。
9:14 And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.
9:15 アダルの月の十四日にまたスサにいるユダヤ人が集まり、スサで三百人を殺した。しかし、そのぶんどり物には手をかけなかった。
9:15 For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.
9:16 王の諸州にいる他のユダヤ人もまた集まって、自分たちの生命を保護し、その敵に勝って平安を得、自分たちを憎む者七万五千人を殺した。しかし、そのぶんどり物には手をかけなかった。
9:16 But the other Jews that were in the king's provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of their foes seventy and five thousand, but they laid not their hands on the prey,
9:17 これはアダルの月の十三日であって、その十四日に休んで、その日を酒宴と喜びの日とした。
9:17 On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
9:18 しかしスサにいるユダヤ人は十三日と十四日に集まり、十五日に休んで、その日を酒宴と喜びの日とした。
9:18 But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
9:19 それゆえ村々のユダヤ人すなわち城壁のない町々に住む者はアダルの月の十四日を喜びの日、酒宴の日、祝日とし、互に食べ物を贈る日とした。
9:19 Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the towns without protective walls, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.
9:20 モルデカイはこれらのことを書きしるしてアハシュエロス王の諸州にいるすべてのユダヤ人に、近い者にも遠い者にも書を送り、
9:20 And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,
9:21 アダルの月の十四日と十五日とを年々祝うことを命じた。
9:21 To establish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,
9:22 すなわちこの両日にユダヤ人がその敵に勝って平安を得、またこの月は彼らのために憂いから喜びに変り、悲しみから祝日に変ったので、これらを酒宴と喜びの日として、互に食べ物を贈り、貧しい者に施しをする日とせよとさとした。
9:22 As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
9:23 そこでユダヤ人は彼らがすでに始めたように、またモルデカイが彼らに書き送ったように、行うことを約束した。
9:23 And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;
9:24 これはアガグびとハンメダタの子ハマン、すなわちすべてのユダヤ人の敵がユダヤ人を滅ぼそうとはかり、プルすなわちくじを投げて彼らを絶やし、滅ぼそうとしたが、
9:24 Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;
9:25 エステルが王の前にきたとき、王は書を送って命じ、ハマンがユダヤ人に対して企てたその悪い計画をハマンの頭上に臨ませ、彼とその子らを木に掛けさせたからである。
9:25 But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
9:26 このゆえに、この両日をプルの名にしたがってプリムと名づけた。そしてこの書のすべての言葉により、またこの事について見たところ、自分たちの会ったところによって、
9:26 Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,
9:27 ユダヤ人は相定め、年々その書かれているところにしたがい、その定められた時にしたがって、この両日を守り、自分たちと、その子孫およびすべて自分たちにつらなる者はこれを行い続けて廃することなく、
9:27 The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;
9:28 この両日を、代々、家々、州々、町々において必ず覚えて守るべきものとし、これらのプリムの日がユダヤ人のうちに廃せられることのないようにし、またこの記念がその子孫の中に絶えることのないようにした。
9:28 And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.
9:29 さらにアビハイルの娘である王妃エステルとユダヤ人モルデカイは、権威をもってこのプリムの第二の書を書き、それを確かめた。
9:29 Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.
9:30 そしてアハシュエロスの国の百二十七州にいるすべてのユダヤ人に、平和と真実の言葉をもって書を送り、
9:30 And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,
9:31 断食と悲しみのことについて、ユダヤ人モルデカイと王妃エステルが、かつてユダヤ人に命じたように、またユダヤ人たちが、かつて自分たちとその子孫のために定めたように、プリムのこれらの日をその定めた時に守らせた。
9:31 To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had commanded with authority them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.
9:32 エステルの命令はプリムに関するこれらの事を確定した。またこれは書にしるされた。
9:32 And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
10:1 アハシュエロス王はその国および海に沿った国々にみつぎを課した。
10:1 And the king Ahasuerus laid a tribute upon the land, and upon the isles of the sea.
10:2 彼の権力と勢力によるすべての事業、および王がモルデカイを高い地位にのぼらせた事の詳しい話はメデアとペルシャの王たちの日誌の書にしるされているではないか。
10:2 And all the acts of his power and of his might, and the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai, unto which the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?
10:3 ユダヤ人モルデカイはアハシュエロス王に次ぐ者となり、ユダヤ人の中にあって大いなる者となり、その多くの兄弟に喜ばれた。彼はその民の幸福を求め、すべての国民に平和を述べたからである。
10:3 For Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed.
